World Parkinson's Program 09.12.2020

Happy holidays from our families here at the World Parkinson's Program to yours. This holiday season, let us not forget those around us. Do your part in stopping the spread of COVID-19 by practicing social distancing. We can understand the sadness that comes with not seeing your family and friends, especially during the holidays. However, these sacrifices can save lives and reduce the burden on our healthcare workers. Together, we can make a difference! #Holidays2020 #happyholidays2020 #parkinsonsdisease #COVID19 #covidlockdown #socialdistancing

As many parts of the world are moving back into lockdowns due to COVID-19, we can understand that motivating yourself to get through this again can be tough. Sarah Saeed, Registered Psychotherapist, suggests that you create SMART goals to keep yourself motivated and uplifted during these tough times. Here is an example of how we would set a SMART goal: Specific: I want to mail out gifts to 10 family members Measurable: I want to complete this task by December 20, 2020 Attain...able: I can order all gifts through Amazon and have them shipped directly to ensure I am not risking my health Relevant: Since I cannot physically see my family this holiday season, this is the best way for me to keep up the holiday spirit and keep my family safe! Time based: I have 7 days to complete to reach this goal! #parkinsonsdisease #parkinsonsawareness #COVID19 #covidlockdown #mondaymotivation

Did you know that the average life expectancy of a Parkinson’s patient is 5 to 8 years after diagnosis but with proper medication this is extended to as much as 25 to 30 functional years? Tomorrow is International Universal Health Coverage Day. On this day, we should remember and support the thousands of people with Parkinson's living without access to their essential medications. Every single individual deserves access to essential treatments. Donate to the World Parkinson's Program today to support those without access to universal health care today. https://pdprogram.org/donate-now/ #UniversalHealthCoverage #internationaluniversalhealthcoverageday #parkinsonsdisease #parkinsonsawareness

This year, the holidays will be different. Let's make sure to think about others in these times of uncertainty. This can be as simple as staying home for the holidays to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Your sacrifice today can help save lives tomorrow. #parkinsonsdisease #parkinsonsawareness #covid19 #COVID #holidays2020

The Constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO) states that "the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition." This was written in 1946. In 2020, many of the health disparities have increased significantly specifically based on race, religion, economic and social conditions. Millions of people are lacking basic healthcare leading to preventable disease outcomes and untimely deaths. Support the World Parkinson's Program to help uphold the basic human right to health for people with Parkinson's globally. #HumanRightsDay2020 #HumanRightsDay #healthcare #health #parkinsonsdisease #parkinsonsawareness

Shane McPhee, Board of Director at WPP, recounts the story and dedicates a poem for when he found a ring on the pavement and it turned out to be a priceless jewel! After trying to locate the owner with no luck, he donated the ring to a Parkinson's charity auction. Thank you, Shane for your continued dedication to help improve the lives of those impacted by Parkinson's. Your selflessness inspires us all. Help us kickstart our Giving Tuesday fundraiser!! Together let us care about Parkinson's in Africa. Did you know that essential Parkinson's medications are only available in 12.5% of Africa compared to 79% in Europe? This Giving Tuesday on December 1, 2020 let us all come together to care about Parkinson's in Africa. There are hundreds of thousands of people with Parkinson's living in African nations undiagnosed and untreated. Lack of neurologists, inaccessibility to medicat...ions, and poverty all prevent people with Parkinson's from getting essential treatment. With the spread of COVID-19 many of these individuals have been pushed further into poverty and left isolated. Join the World Parkinson's Program in tackling this growing disparity. Give on Giving Tuesday to help us raise $70,000 needed to provide free medications to our patients in Morocco, Ethiopia, Uganda, Liberia, Zambia, Kenya, Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria for 1-year. #givingtuesday2020 #parkinsonsafrica #parkinsonsdisease #parkinsons

This Giving Tuesday, let us come together and continue to help individuals like Yibrihu Tsegaye from Ethiopia and all across Africa. https://givingtuesday.ca/partners/world-parkinsons-program Tsegaye's story: Yibrihu Tsegaye, a bedridden Parkinson’s patient, lives in public housing in Ethiopia, and used to sell tella, a traditional Ethiopian alcoholic drink, and injera, food made from Ethiopian teff grains, to earn her living. After developing Parkinson’s disease, living an...d working as she did before became difficult, and nearly impossible. It became more difficult for Tsegaye to work as she did before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s. With the passage of time her illness became debilitating and she was rendered entirely unable to work. At this time, her children offered support, and although her children’s love eased Tsegaye’s burden, their aid did not last nearly long enough. She lost all but one of her children not long after. Her lone living child was a diabetic patient and was also unable to work and earn money for them. All these circumstances forced Tsegaye to live below the poverty line. Getting a balanced diet, much less proper medication, was nearly impossible. Thanks to the free medications sent by the World Parkinson’s Program and support from the Parkinson’s Patients Support Organization-Ethiopia, Tsegaye received six months worth of Levodopa. Tsegaye is able to now better manage symptoms of the disease with the provided free medications. I don’t [think] I [would be] able to buy and take my medicine if I [did] not [receive] this donation. #givingtuesday2020 #parkinsonsafrica #parkinsonsmed #parkinsonsdisease #givingbacktothecommunity #parkinsons GivingTuesday Giving Tuesday Canada
