Scary times at the Pharmacy!

Many questions are posed about the difference between the regular flu shot and the High Dose for seniors. Basically, there are 4 strains ( 2 A and 2 B ) in the quadrivalent Flulaval or Flucelvax. The Government of Ontario decides which are sent to pharmacies. The High Dose Fluzone is prepared with a higher potency of 2 A strains and one B. In adults 65 years of age and over, the burden of influenza A(H3N2) is higher compared to influenza A(H1N1) and influenza B. Seasons with circulation of influenzaA(H3N2) result in more outbreaks, hospitalizations and deaths, most commonly among older adults.
