I regularly straighten my hair but my natural hair is wavy. When I took my first steps to reduce my plastic pollution, one of the things I felt I needed to give up was curly hair because of the amount of product it took to have frizz-free, defined waves. When i straighten my hair the only product I need is a heat protectant but with curly hair there is mousse, gel, hair spray, curl activators, curl definers, the list is endless. However, as i get older and my hair gets thinn...er, I am starting to be concerned about the amount of heat I use to style my hair on a daily basis. So I have been reading about the "Curly Girl Method" online for no heat curls which is meant to help your natural curls/waves over time without heat. The problem is...this method uses a lot of product, in some cases 5 different products...all in plastic bottles. I took to Pinterest to try and find some DIY options and came across a salt spray which uses 1Tbsp of Salt, coconut oil and leave in conditioner (I've had this one laying around for years) and 1 cup of hot water. I used this concoction for a few days and found that my hair was so dry and frizzy. Apparently Marc Anthony Products aren't great (probably why I've held on to it for years) so I bought some product and I'm going to see how it goes. Things I'm learning: 1. The process takes patience, which I struggle with 2. This is a trial and error process 3. I've tried 2 microfiber hair towels and none stay on my head through the night so i might need to just let my hair hair dry during the day 4. Our Softening Butter was an amazing moisture boost for my hair, who knew? If you have hair tips, send them my way! I will just be over here trying to make a better salt spray and trying to follow the #curlygirlmethod without contributing to plastic waste ** tip: mix everything in a measuring glass first, i poured my hot water right into the plastic containers and it warped.
