Over the past few weeks, within our family and among friends, we've had a number of conversations about racism. Racism is painful and ugly. I've heard stories and seen too many downright disgusting actions but couldn't find my voice in this. But after a conversation last night about defunding police, I spoke up about systemic racism in healthcare, and basically to say that it exists in every system and institution, and a lot of effort must be taken to change mental models, be...liefs and assumptions. It's a long road ahead but I truly hope we are all listening and taking steps in whatever way each of us can. Tonight I came across this article, which highlights some of what I was sharing in last night's conversation. Fortunately in my professional and personal life, I've participated in trainings, workshops and heard first-hand accounts of racism. I feel deep empathy and often frustrated by my own capacity to make a significant change. Although I'm still unsure what to say, concerned I'll say the wrong thing, I'll use this platform to begin. I'm sorry for every Indigenous, Black, Brown women, man and child who has suffered from systemic racism. Are we waking up? First day of the school year got me thinking What makes a great teacher? My 12 yr old came home & said his teacher is "amazing!" So I asked what makes her amazing? He responds: - You have to engage with kids, get to know them, talk to them & help. - Be fair - Not all work, work, work put the fun into school Substitute "kids" and "school" these are valid points for any people leader...wise words straight from a kid. #leadership #consciousleadership
