Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council 22.01.2021

While we all play our part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and keep our population physically healthy, the measures we are taking such as physical distancing, self-quarantine, and self-isolation may lead to new or heightened mental health concerns such as loneliness, anxiety, or depression. In a time where we are adjusting to new circumstances such as working from home, having our children home from school, and being unable to participate in group activities or team sports, ...it is important to be intentional and mindful about caring for your own wellness. At the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council, we want to do our part to support you as you support your own mental health, and support those within your household. We have compiled a list of locally developed information and tip sheets, as well as a list of local, provincial, and national support services that can be accessed virtually during this time:

#WellbeingAdventCalendar2020 Today, a reminder that one way to be gentle with yourself over the holidays is to eliminate pressures. We may feel enough pressure during normal times to host the perfect gathering, give the perfect gift, cook the perfect meal, or buy the perfect outfit. This year, just as the stressors we face may look different or be amplified, so might the pressures and expectations. We may feel pressure as we look to adapt traditions and routines to meet the p...ublic health guidelines we are following, or to find virtual ways to gather with friends and family. During these times of pressure and expectations, consider how these pressures can be eliminated and your own wellbeing can be prioritized. Particularly if you experience heightened negative emotions during the holidays or are experiencing this during the time of COVID-19, be gentle with yourself, eliminate pressures as much as possible, and find ways to slow down this season. wrspc.ca/dec20 See more

#WellbeingAdventCalendar2020 The practice of mindfulness is often spoken of and has been researched as an effective practice for coping with stress, anxiety, or depression. Toronto's non-profit The Centre for Mindfulness Studies shares with us some suggestions for how mindfulness can be useful in the current times of uncertainty, and shares some practices you can try. New to mindfulness, or uncertain of what it is or involves? They also share an introduction to mindfulness. Links to these articles available on buff.ly/3ndJRGD

#WellbeingAdventCalendar2020 "Finding a way to stay socially connected during the pandemic is probably one of the best things we can do for our mental health". From Calgary's Centre for Suicide Prevention comes the third post in their "Hope, belonging, meaning and purpose: suicide prevention in times of crisis" blog series, titled "Maintaining relationships and social connection". This post explores why social connection is important, and how we can adapt to new forms of socialization in a time of physical distancing from those outside our immediate household. While adapting to these new ways of connection is a significant change, and change can be hard, CSP covers that in a previous blog post, "Change is hard: learning to adapt".
