Our final club for WUSA’s Volunteer Awards is @uwstudentshelpingseniors ! SHS won the Initiative award and has been running since Spring 2020 SHS aims to help support seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic and support students virtually connecting with seniors during the most restrictive times. Normally, seniors residing in nursing homes and retirement residences are able to have family and friends over, especially during special days like birthdays and holidays. Ever since ...the pandemic began, seniors are facing restrictions on visitors and are much more isolated compared to normal circumstances. Our club hopes to fill in the gaps of having visitors by sending birthday cards to celebrate the seniors' birthdays and make them feel more connected. This also rings a positive impact on the student volunteers of our club by allowing them to become active contributors to our community by supporting and helping during the pandemic. Our main activity is to send monthly birthday cards for the seniors in two nursing homes in KW. We also actively seek to receive PPE donations to distribute to various nursing homes in the region. Finally, we have recently begun a pen-pal system where seniors who are interested in sending replies back to the cards the students sent, are able to use the extra blank cards we are sending. We are hoping to launch Quarantine Buddies, which are one-on-one weekly video-chatting sessions with seniors of Chartwell Retirement Residence for any interested volunteers. This way, students will be able to connect with the seniors better during COVID-19 and support each other! We are also hoping to host events for donations that will support seniors in our KW region during the pandemic.

Next up for Volunteer Appreciation is Monica Xu, who is in 4B Computer Science and has won the Executive Award! I helped foster community combat social isolation for @UWACC through hosting Music Trivia Night, watch parties, Discord contests, and the likes. There was always something going on every week! Members were able to keep track of social events through a curated weekly email digest I led. Huge shoutout to the @UWACC execs (Alisa, Egan, Moira, Reid) and the Unaccompanied Minors for all their hard work and uplifting energy Hope everyone had fun this term and keep your eyes peeled for upcoming music releases from UWACC in the next few months! This semester has been a major challenge for clubs but so many club presidents and execs rose to the challenge! Eden Solomon is a 3B Honors Biology Co-op student the president of @uw.bmlt and is this semester’s winner of the President’s Award for WUSA’s Volunteer Awards! I have been serving as the president for @uw.bmlt since it was created in January. Throughout this time the club has grown immensely, and as a team we have been able to create a supportive community for BI...POC students who wish to pursue a career in health care. Part of my role includes coordinating between execs, reaching out to external affiliates, and maintaining communication with other COS chapters across Ontario. Our goal is to provide a platform for students to actively engage in discussions and provide them with relevant resources to increase minority representation in medicine! Stay tuned to see more winners from WUSA’s Volunteer Awards! #uwaterloo #wusaclubs
