As the opt-out period is coming to an end, WUSC McMaster urges everyone to opt-in to the WUSC refugee student fee. Many don't know that this fee directly impacts the livelihood of the two refugee students that are sponsored here at McMaster every year. With just $1.63 a year, we are able to help them settle in a new country, provide them with basic necessities and a year of education. Here's what one of our refugee students has to say about the positive impact of this fee: "...Having had the opportunity to come to Canada through the SRP was the single thing that changed my life and put it on the right path. I was a refugee in a country with no official status, with no financial help and without a permit to work. I had to work under the table for 14 hours a day and for a compensation that is less than minimum wage, always had the fear of deportation and I was losing my physical and mental health slowly. The generosity of McMaster students who pay a student levy of $1.63 made it possible for me to be sponsored to Canada and McMaster University, granting me an official status in the country and helping me financially with my first year of school before becoming eligible for OSAP the following years. I hope that you consider opting in for the WUSC student refugee fee and continue to make a tangible impact on the lives of disadvantaged youth." A huge thank you from all of us at WUSC and our past, current and future refugee students. See more
