A little too late but necessary to protect the essential workers. Warehouse workers declared as essential need essential protection. At the same time MOL needs to be transparent and provide information regarding employers that were penalized. #PaidSickLeave #essentialworkers https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=2138627
A little too late! It makes no sense for the on-site inspections to be announced before they are conducted. Is Ministry sending warning signal to employers ? Or just giving them heads up to be in compliance. https://www.thestar.com//labour-inspectors-target-peel-war

Essential Workers need protection NOW! Thank you @ETFO Peel for highlighting these demands
"Insufficient paid sick days, financial/income supports, and sick leave protection are known barriers to compliance to COVID-19 control measures, including testing and self-isolation. Paid sick day supports for workers who have COVID-19 or need to isolate because they may have been exposed to the virus will help support workers to follow public health guidance and support our essential businesses to operate safely, reducing community transmission of COVID-19." ORGANIZING WORKS! For months, migrant student workers shared our stories, signed petitions, called MPs, and organized public actions. And WE WON. We stopped mas...s deportations of tens of thousands of people! The federal government has made post graduate work permits (PGWPs) renewable, for the first time ever in Canadian history. ++ More information will be coming soon, so SIGN UP TO STAY CONNECTED: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/msuconnect/ ++ Support us to continue to organize and win: http://migrantworkersalliance.org/donate/ The fight is not over. Many migrant student workers are in essential jobs, but our work is not valued or counted towards permanent immigration status because it is low-waged and deemed low-skilled. We know that it is the work we do delivery, warehousing, construction, retail, care which sustains society. We will continue to take action so that all our work is valued. This isn’t just a victory for migrant student workers. It’s a victory for all migrant and undocumented people because it shows that together we can organize to win the changes we deserve. Now, more than ever, we must all unite for full and permanent immigration status for all and build the world we want to live in.
Amazon unlike other employers is not transparent about number of cases in their facilities. Not only that Amazon is not fully transparent with workers about which shift or section was the positive case reported within their facility. Other major concerns of employees include lack of social distancing, workplace injuries, stringent productivity quotas even during pandemic, lack of support for injured workers, no job security, lack of access to washrooms and so many more. It also seems Public Health authorities are siding with such employers and not disclosing full information. Ministry of Labour not publicly posting complaints and orders against employers. https://www.theglobeandmail.com//article-business-is-boom/
Thanks to all the organizers of Migrant Workers Alliance for Change. This was much awaited victory!
Calling for paid sick leave for all workers! Paid sick leave is the permanent and preventative strategy that could help contain the spread without financial loss to workers. This can also in the long run help lower healthcare costs. It only makes sense to have paid sick leave in a Health crisis. It can save lives!
Regional based approach will best help Peel schools in transitioning to in-person classes. We don't want to rush students and teachers into schools if that will affect our communities adversely. Peel Public Health must not ignore these requests from Peel Elementary Teachers.
Peel Public Health also must release the names of workplaces with outbreaks. We all deserve transparency and it saves lives. #essentialworkersmatter #StopTheSpreadOfCOVID19 https://www.thestar.com//health-authorities-to-identify-wo

Peel Public Health has investigated over 1,500 workplace COVID-19 exposures and one out of three (33.6 per cent) of these outbreaks have been in manufacturing or industrial settings. Amazon rewards workers for perfect attendance while telling them to take day off if unwell. Workers are encouraged to maintain social distancing inside warehouses but at the same time if workers don’t perform up to their productivity standard they risk losing their jobs. How can someone follow proper safety protocols while keeping up with the expected pace? These messages are contradictory and confusing for workers. Amazon must prioritize worker’s Health and Safety. Also where is the pandemic pay for these essential workers?? https://www.thestar.com//i-am-scared-to-take-a-day-off-whe #essentialworkersmatter #pandemicpay

The situation is kind of critical and these workers, they need support, said Gagandeep Kaur of the Warehouse Workers Centre. One of the problems fueling COVID-19 transmission is a lack of legislated, paid sick days for the numerous temporary workers at the facilities. It means they either stay home without pay or go to work sick, hoping they don’t have the coronavirus and avoid infecting others, said Kaur. https://nationalpost.com//working-conditions-are-hell-amaz

Essential workers are the backbone of our nation. Without these heroes none of us will have food on the table or medicines or other essential supplies. But these workers never get the respect that they deserve. I think it’s about time we start recognizing their place in this society and treat them well! Warehouse workers are essential workers
WWCPeel supports thousands of farmers in India protesting against the new agricultural reforms. The neoliberal policies are designed to favour the rich corporates and are a direct attack on democracy. We stand together with farmers in their fight for preserving their rights and livelihood. #wesupportfarmers #farmerprotest https://warehouseworkers.ca/
Wishing everyone a Happy Diwali!
About 400 reported cases in Amazon fulfillment Centres in Peel! According to an analysis by the union-led Ontario Health Coalition, the number of cases in the manufacturing sector in that province soared by 76 per cent over a recent two-week period. We still don’t understand why Public Health is not transparent with releasing names of businesses affected. We deserve the right to know where the spread is happening to make more informed decisions about our day to day activity.... https://nationalpost.com//cb2c0e8c-3b5a-4468-9847-ef/amp/

If you’ve ever wondered why a Toronto suburb of 1.5 million people is one of the hardest hit spots in Canada’s COVID-19 pandemic, ask yourself this question: When was the last time you ordered something online? #Peel #Brampton #essentialworkers #workersrights #PaidSickLeave https://www.theglobeandmail.com//article-theyre-going-to-/
A shocking fact: Injury rate of Amazon Warehouse workers is 15% higher in Canadian Warehouses as compared to US ones. Moreover Amazon, the trillion dollar company is saving money on WSIB in Ontario by playing around with lenient laws. Can we classify these warehouses as specialized retail stores just like Costco? How can we even equalize these two? These workplaces are not safe and neither is our workforce employed in them. Amazon makes millions in profit every minute but ...cannot invest towards worker’s health or safety. That’s a shame! https://www.thestar.com//amazon-warehouse-workers-saw-inju #workersrights #essentialworkers

Second wave of pandemic is worse than first one. We in the Region of Peel are in lockdown, number of cases are on the rise but where is the recognition for workers risking their lives at work. Workers deserve better pay and protections. https://bramptonist.com/unions-for-warehouse-retail-worker/
Brampton the home of essential workers but most of them are racialized, new immigrants or migrant workers, employed in low earning, temporary precarious jobs with risks so high and bare minimum protections. We need to stand up for ourselves and ask for more. The essential jobs need essential rights! That's why we are asking for more. Please read our full statement in the comments. https://toronto.citynews.ca//large-households-high-number/
If Sobeys can, so can the others. Workers in essential jobs need to be recognized for their efforts during this second wave. #secondwavepandemicpay #workersdeservebetter #workersrights https://www.cbc.ca//busi/sobeys-grocery-pandemic-1.5819273
Amazon is growing day by day but the warehouse workers are risking their lives everyday for low pay. Time for this trillion dollar company to start treating their workers with respect and give them their due share. Workers deserve better#makeamazonpay #organizeamazon #blackfriday2020 #secondwavepandemicpay
Region of Peel is under lockdown again but essential services such as schools, retail, warehouses remain open with workers in these facilities continuing to risk their lives everyday. Congregate events and gatherings are not allowed at least until January 07,2020 in Peel Region but what about tens of thousands of workers in warehouses throughout the region who cannot practice social distancing? What about the lack of regulations needed to protect workers, and a provincial Ford government that has failed to bring in proper measures such as paid sick days or guaranteed pandemic pay? Please join Warehouse Workers Centre in demanding essential rights for essential workers. https://warehouseworkers.ca

The industrial workers don’t have the option to work from home and more measures are needed to ensure their safety, according to the Warehouse Workers Centre (WWC), a Brampton-based group that educates workers in the sector on their rights. Workers are worried they will make their families sick but have no other choice. They need to pay their bills. Stricter regulations and increased inspections are necessary to ensure that industrial businesses are investing in preventativ...e measures, such as protective equipment and physical distancing. https://www.theglobeandmail.com//article-ontarios-peel-re/ See more
Workplaces in Peel continue to be the hotbed for spreading the virus in Peel as per top doctors but workers are forced to go to work in unsafe conditions. The warehouses employ hundreds to thousands working under same roof with lack of social distancing, no time to follow proper hygiene, lack of PPE and so many more health and safety violations. These workers are risking their lives to support and provide for communities but they also need the same level of protections. Companies like Amazon paid pandemic pay only until the end of May but pandemic isn't over yet and now with second wave in full swing these workers deserve to be treated with respect and must be paid pandemic pay. #workersrights##workersdeservebetter###Secondwavepandemicpay

Amazon says this will lead to job creation and these jobs are permanent. But what about all those that are already working like robots with little to no guarantee if they will ever get permanent status. Amazon needs to stop encouraging precarious unsafe working conditions. Workers need safe, secure and stable jobs. Can Amazon provide those? Can the richest company on earth respect worker’s lives and rights? They can if they want. That’s for sure! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQm6ydfJ5g8

We did all that by standing strong and by facing those challenges. Warehouse Workers Centre salute and honour all the essential workers who risked their lives to provide for others during this crisis. These tough times has once again proven that we are important to keep this society functioning. We need to use our collective power to demand better wages and working conditions. Thank you Peel Regional Labour Council for organizing the Car caravan yesterday to honour this historic day.

Millions of people lost work and wages during COVID-19. But there's an added cost to migrant students - without these jobs, they can't apply for permanent resi...dency (PR). Now post graduate work permits (PGWP) are expiring, and thousands of people are in crisis. If work permits remain non-renewable, students will lose status and the ability to get PR. Tell Prime Minister Trudeau and Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino to #FixPGWP and ensure #StatusforAll: https://migrantworkersalliance.org/fixpgwp/
