Check out the Inuktitut version of our video below. World Wide Hearing has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by supporting the production of transparent face masks in Indigenous communities across six regions in Canada. Thanks to the support from the Canadian Red Cross and the Government of Canada, we worked with wonderful women from Nunavut to sew transparent face masks; the non-medical masks were donated to schools and eldercare centres in the community. Visit www.wwhearing.org to know what you can do to help. #ECSFund https://youtu.be/ifrvODH7548

So why is Zoom, the most popular video-conferencing company, asking people with hearing loss to pay for the equal access that they need? For those of us with hearing loss, captions are our ramps. But Zoom keeps them out of reach, hidden behind a paywall. We should not be forced to pay for the feature we require for equal access. Like ramps, captioning is good universal design, benefiting not only people with hearing issues but all users, including people for whom English is a second language. https://www.washingtonpost.com//zoom-captions-hearing-los/

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is an unexplained loss of hearing that occurs at once or rapidly over a few days and affects the inner ear mechanism. It can sometimes occur with other symptoms such as tinnitus (ringing in the ear), ear fullness, or dizziness. In what could have important implications for the development of regenerative treatments for hearing loss in humans, a study led by a team of Israeli researchers has for the first time shown that physical forces drive the organization of hair cells in the inner ear of mammals. https://www.jpost.com//revolutionary-inner-ear-study-could

In discussions of the pandemic and remote work accommodations, accessibility advocates who support those with hearing loss and neurological challenges have noted even the pre-pandemic standard for best in "accessibility" left a lot to be desired. Today, in the grip of the coronavirus, advocates agree that a higher quality of support should be made available. One option attracting greater attention is enabling accommodations for remote work that help the neuro-diverse work more productively. These remote work set-ups were often denied by employers in pre-pandemic settings over concerns about set-up costs and team communication. https://www.forbes.com//the-tech-sector-should-listen-to/

Hearing loss experts at Mass Eye and Ear are advocating for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to implement a law passed by Congress permitting the sale of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. In a new column published November 19 in The New England Journal of Medicine, the experts write that the FDA has remained silent after missing the statutory deadline to implement the Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act of 2017. The authors point out that hearing aids are typically... not covered by insurance, and such new regulations could greatly increase access to the devices and improve quality of life for some of the 30 million Americans who are hard of hearing. https://www.news-medical.net//Hearing-loss-experts-urge-FD

There are a number of hearing-related apps available for smartphones, such as decibel-measuring apps that tell you how loud it is around you. Other apps can perform a basic screening test to measure your hearing, and some let you "train" your brain with hearing exercises. But for people who wear hearing aidsor who are considering getting fitted for hearing aidsthe most relevant category is apps that are made by hearing aid manufacturers. Through Bluetooth, these apps conn...ect with the hearing aids a person is wearing, and are available on both Apple and Android phones. https://www.healthyhearing.com//53158-Hearing-aid-apps-sma

Last Friday something historic happened at the White House, but you likely missed it. For the first time ever, an American Sign Language interpreter was there for the coronavirus briefing. It took a landmark lawsuit to make that happen. https://wjla.com//turning-point-for-the-deaf-first-asl-sig

The data show that each type of medical mask in this study essentially functioned as a low-pass acoustic filter for speech, attenuating the high frequencies (2000-7000 Hz) spoken by the wearer by 3 to 4 dB for a simple medical mask and close to 12 dB for the N95 masks. This means the speech quality degradation, in combination with room noise/reverberation and the absence of visual cues, renders speech close to unintelligible for many patients with hearing loss. https://www.hearingreview.com//how-do-medical-masks-degrad
