Living Wood Redux was the Prix de Rome research project we undertook in Scandinavia, Japan and Europe where we lectured and meet with like minded academic, professional, and government personnel who are invested in the fields of advanced wood construction in architecture. As late as the turn of the 20th Century, the Scarborough Bluffs retreated at a rate of nearly a meter a year. The sand from the erosion was swept along to the mouth of the Don River, where it helped form the peninsula that became Toronto Island. Yet, by the early 60’s conservation authorities moved in to slow the erosion which was sending houses toppling over the edge and threatening many more. The greened cliffs, while they look appropriately natural, are actually the destru...ction of the natural ecosystem and cycle of erosion of this area. Most of the narrow, natural beaches have disappeared while the slopes above have become more gradual and more treed. Slope stability in this natural environment is an artifice, yet it becomes the ‘new nature’ and is protected as such.
