Upgrading computers means going through every little file and document to make sure nothing important is tossed.....I happened to stumble across this little gem... of an image I always wanted to do something with.....luckily the original is an EPS file @ 170MG so I’m thinking of printing on canvas stretched on gallery stretcher bars..... 8 1/2 years ago I was sitting at the end of our dock enjoying end of a beauty summer day when I spotted our resident loons in the middle of the lake ......diving and fussing and flapping and splashing ......I knew they were feeding and I could see they were drifting toward my location. This happened frequently as our lake is deep and a rocky sloping shoreline attracted minnows and crayfish around the shores of out waterfront. Time to get up and grab another cider and my canon camera just in case, I thought.....although these loons were a common sight on our lake they were quite elusive and I could never get a decent image of them. But that day not only did I have the time.....I had the lens! when I came back down to the dock I could see the loons were indeed slowly drifting toward me, and I knew they wanted to feed closer to the shore. But these loons are very protective of each other and I wasn’t sure if they became aware of my presence that they would be spooked and dive down into the dark cool depths of the lake only to appear halfway across the lake towards the opposite shore. so I waited......quietly taking test shots of them as they drifted closer......out of range.....and the light would begin to fade soon.....but I had the summer solstice on my side.....it was June 23rd, 2 days after the longest day of the year, and I was ready. closer and closer they got!preening and diving and popping up again. Then they both disappeared! GONE!! I scanned the lake surface with my camera, searching, hoping, but seeing nothing. Then like two silent submarines slicing through the water surface THERE THEY WERE! And much much closer. They had indeed intended to feed on the sloping shoreline off the dock but they had to come up for air.....but they were to far away....or were they?? They spotted me.....I could tell buy their body language this was it.......I stretched the zoom lens out as far as it would go to 400mm and focused in on the lead loon and started to shoot. The sound of the shutter sounded deafening to me but the loons drifted closer and closer......now within the range of the lens and my heart was pounding. Not knowing if any of my shots were any good I couldn’t afford to look at the viewing screen....I just kept refocussing and shooting......then........gone. Into the depths of Haines Lake and around the front of the point where they popped up and started their eerie and magical loon songs as they slipped off into the dusky dusk........but this is what I got......one pose. One shot. One chance.
