On November 15th, National Philanthropy Day honors those who give back to their communities. The word philanthropy comes from Latin and Greek philanthropia which gives us kindliness, humanity, and love for mankind. From this, we take the philo (tending to, fond of) and join antropos meaning mankind or human beings. Philanthropists give of their time and money in ways that provide a lasting impact. Some of the ways philanthropy changes the world include: supporting education ...through scholarships, grants, foundations and more foundations supporting scientific research development of charities funding grants to programs for local, national and international needs encourage art through grants and foundations invest in advocacy platforms for the underprivileged The day recognizes philanthropists for their many significant contributions, help and good deeds and for the differences that they have made in our lives and our communities. While philanthropy is giving and kind, it is a type of gift that strives to replace social ills with solutions. Philanthropists see issues and try to solve them. Charity often is a tempory solution for a tempory problem. When the issue persists, we seek a cure. There are instances of philanthropy that can overlap with instances of charity. The difference is that charity relieves the pains of social problems, whereas philanthropy attempts to solve those problems at their root causes. During the filming of The Passion of the Christ, Jim Caviezel (playing Jesus) lost 45 pounds, was struck by lightning, accidentally scourged with a whip twice, ...leaving a 14-inch scar, had his shoulder dislocated, and suffered from pneumonia and hypothermia from hanging mostly naked on a cross for several hours outside. His body was so stressed and exhausted from playing the role that he had to have 2 open heart surgeries after the production! The crucifixion scene alone took 5 weeks of the 2-month filming time. The Passion of the Christ is the highest-grossing rated-R movie in the US, of all time, at $370.8M! Worldwide it grossed $611M. Most importantly, it reached many souls around the world. Mel Gibson paid $30M out of his own pocket for the production because no studio would take on the project, and Jim Caviezel was warned not to take the role of Jesus because it would ruin his career. Today is Jim Caviezel’s birthday, and he’s 51 years old. He proudly proclaims his faith in Christ amidst the godlessness of Hollywood. Thank God for people like him who will step out to do what might not sound fun, but it gets out the Word of God and the story of His salvation of mankind. Happy birthday, Jim Caviezel!

It is with great excitement to announce Father Konstantinos Chialtas will be our parish priest until such time we receive our permanent parish priest. Covid-19... has caused quite a disruption in the succession planning for our parish and our community programs. God willing, this will pass quickly. Father Chialtas is young and energetic and will officiate his first service Thursday September 17, 2020 to celebrate St. Sophia and her daughters, and Martyrs Love, Faith and Hope. For the past 40+ years in August Hamilton Greek Fest looks forward to welcoming dedicated festival guests from the Hamilton and surrounding communities to shar...e in the our Greek culture with food , music and dance. As we all very well know Covid -19 has affected us all and has had a tremendous impact on our community. Since we can't celebrate in the same way we have received the approval to go ahead and have a 2 day Food Take out only event. This year it's " Hamilton Greek Fest Express... Take it and GO " with the same delicious Greek food that everyone has become accustomed to. Our volunteer staff and patrons will follow ALL the necessary precautions with PPE and Physical distancing to serve and purchase food. Our Tent will be set up on the Church property courtyard at the Corner of East 15th and Brucedale TAKE-OUT ON SITE ONLY Saturday August 15: 12 noon to 8pm Sunday August 16: 12 noon to 8pm I " ...IT COMES ONCE A GYRO"
