Big read - Cleaning the studio to help clean the mind. Been spending a lot of time lately cleaning and re organizing the studio space. Getting things ready for the next big stage of Wyatt Walkem Design. Before that happens I’ll spend the next month or two trying to finally finish the various work that has been started and not completed over the last 6 years. I love starting projects, I love doing new things. Finishing work feels like departing with some part of myself, the e...xcitement the mystery the challenge of doing something new. Seeing the oil bring the piece to life means it won’t be with me for much longer. I start to remember the excitement of finding the wood then carrying it home with me. The time spent studying the piece to get a good result from it, the hours spent unraveling the wood layer by layer. Then caring for the piece carefully so it would dry safely. I know at this point my time with the piece is almost over so I typically put off the sanding for days, weeks, months and inevitably years as I bury them under new work. Now that they are being uncovered they don’t really represent who I am and what my capabilities to create are now, they’re odd, poorly shaped and not of the same work quality I can produce now. They were my mistakes and triumphs, they deserve to be finished like any other piece of mine. I have done more turning in the last month then I have over the last year... motivation is a tricky thing, the drive to make comes and goes. The struggle to make in order to make money is always present, however something in me makes the motivation to work diminish and the stress of income increase and the cycle repeats and gets worse each time. Forcing myself to get on track to meet deadlines, forcing myself to work hard amidst the stress of deadlines. The force it has taken... to get me through this month of new work and overdue work has been immense. But having made all these wonderful items and worked so hard to do so has brought me a joy a haven’t truly felt with my work in the last 3 years. I look forward to continuing to understand where I came from and where I’m going, to plan out a future and continue to get lost in the moment. Clients bring me odd jobs sometimes. Like taking the door from a heirloom grandfather clock and turning it into a shadow box for the families heirlooms. Note to self - working with someone else’s work isn’t easy, re finishing and hybrid work isn’t for me and really I need to work on learning when to say no. Making boxes is something I would like to get back into one day.. They are time consuming tricky little things where one mistake really shows.
