UPDATE: The project is temp on hold pending the approval of one funder. The funds are on hold/ pending, until more information is provided by the university. I will keep you updated. Onsite Archaeological Work ON HOLD PENDING FUNDING Sept. 2019. Memorial University will be conducting a two week onsite archaeological preliminary survey of the former site of Camp Rathbun located in Deseronto/Napanee starting this September. Camp Rathbun is the most important WW1 aviation archaeological site in Canada. What does Stonehenge and Camp Rathbun have in common? In 1916 a major re-evaluation of Britain’s air strategy and defence was devised. As part of this the British government decided to greatly increase the number of planes required. More planes meant that more airfields were urgently needed, as well as training for those who were to fly them. Stonehenge in England and The Rathbun Farm in Ontario both transformed into one of many new airfields created across southern England a...nd southern Ontario Canada as a result.
