Oops Toolbox Tuesday, 1 day late! Each year as the winter approaches we see an increase of injuries due to slippery conditions as well as material handling. These injuries occur from heights, stairs, uneven or frozen ground and slippery surfaces. The most important thing anyone can do is to identify the hazard and correct it. Last winter we identified the following causes for employee injuries: * slipping on a set of icy stairs * slipping while stepping up on a roadside curb... * slipping while carrying materials in both hands while descending a snow covered hill * attempting to pivot the feet while standing on slippery steel grating * tripping over stored materials To reduce your risk of an injury from slips, trips and strains, please review the following safe work practices: * Identify icy areas and control them with salt and sand * Use ice cleats for traction * Ensure work boots have excellent tread. Winter is here! * Wipe your feet of mud and snow before you climb, enter a vehicle or building * Warm up and keep your muscles loose during the course of the day * Don’t lift awkward or heavy material alone. Seek assistance or use equipment * Keep your hands at your sides for balance, not in your pockets * Don’t carry loads you can’t see over * Don’t park vehicles or equipment in areas where there are elevation drops or tripping hazards * Don’t attempt to walk on steel surfaces such as the tongue of a trailer or a wet steel plate This time of year, it is especially important to focus on where we are going to be walking.
