Today marks the 19th anniversary of the tragic events that took place on September 11th, 2001. On this day, the NATO Association of Canada remembers the near...ly 3,000 victims from more than 60 countries who lost their lives when terrorists attacked the United States. We also remember the heroism exhibited by first responders and ordinary citizens alike who put themselves into harm’s way in order to save lives. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten. The events of September 11th were not solely an attack on the United States. They were an attack on the entire international rules-based order and its guiding principles of freedom, democracy, and equality. When the United States was attacked, NATO and its allies swiftly intervened by invoking Article 5 for the first and only time in the Alliance’s history. In doing so, NATO’s message was sent loud and clear: an attack against one of us is an attack against us all. Nearly two decades later, NATO remains committed to fighting the scourge of terrorism around the world. From standing shoulder to shoulder with our allies in Afghanistan, to training security forces in Iraq, NATO is working to build a future where the threat of terrorism will never again reach our homes. NATO was the answer 71 years ago, when its founding members formed our bulwark of collective defence, and it remains the answer today. We hope you will join us in a moment of silent reflection to remember the lives lost and the those that were changed forever. #September11 U.S. Mission to NATO U.S. Embassy Ottawa
