Congratulations to our February Leader of the Month! YCLM Member: Cody Nowell Company: PCL Constructors Canada Inc.... Title: Manager, Construction Services As a construction services manager Cody oversees PCL’s virtual design and construction (VDC), quality, scheduling, document control, and construction engineering groups in Manitoba and Northern Ontario. His leadership in each of these departments has created an environment that our industry can be proud of and learn from. His mentorship and oversight in the VDC department has brought our industry to "new heights" encouraging drone technology in the field. Cody continues to inspire and mentor other young leaders to follow their passion in the construction industry. Congratulations to our January Leader of the Month! YCLM Member: Geoff Wurtak Company: Winnipeg Building & Decorating Ltd.... Title: Project Manager FEATURED PROJECT: True North Square: Hargrave Street Market Gusto North, Yard Burger, The Good Fight Taco, Saburo Kitchen, Rose Bar, & Mottola Grocery. PROJECT DETAILS Winnipeg Building & Decorating ltd. was selected to bring six of eight restaurant concepts, along with Winnipeg’s first boutique grocer, Mottola Grocery, to completion for True North Square’s new food hall which features all locally established restauranteurs. Geoff was responsible for the successful completion of all concepts, including extensive value engineering, scheduling, execution, and communicating to all project stakeholders. The Hargrave Street Market restaurant fit-ups had numerous challenges, including working on several projects simultaneously with one completion date, overcoming building-specific constraints/limitations, attention to detail for high-end finishes, coordination of owner supplied kitchen equipment, and acting as prime general contractor for various other general contractors. Geoff is excited to maintain the relationships built over the course of these projects and return to Hargrave Street Market to enjoy and support the local restaurants. In addition to his busy day job, Tyler is an active member in the construction industry. He is a member of WCA's Government Relations Committee, a CPA Mentor, and the lead of the community relations committee at Parkwest. Tyler has organized successful fundraising events for local organizations through Parkwest and outside of work as well. He has a passion for the local community." Congratulations to our YCLM Leader of the Month! YCLM Member: Muriel Torchia Shyjak Company: MG Electrical/Mechanical Services Ltd... Title: Director of Operations - Owner Featured Project: Promotion of Women in the Trades Project Details: Muriel has been volunteering her time to promote women in the trades since purchasing the MG Electric/Mechanical Services Ltd with her partner in 2016. She has worked as a mentor at the Young Women's Conference in 2018 and 2019 that introduces high school girls to various training and employment opportunities in traditionally male sectors. At the beginning of this 2020, Muriel spoke on a panel for Manitoba Women in Construction's Building Her Story event, sharing personal stories and thoughts about increasing the visibility of women in the industry, as well as mentorship and building a professional network. She joined the Office to Advance Women Apprentices Advisory Board as an Industry Representative to help further this narrative. Muriel actively recruits and hires women and works on connecting other qualified candidates to local businesses. Thanks for your submission Muriel! She played a key role in providing networking and guided support to Aboriginal artists in multiple disciplines: music, art, crafts, and other business ventures.
