Our January member spotlight features Cody Shimizu! I developed a passion for the outdoors through mountain biking, exploring Edmonton’s River Valley. The welcoming mountain biking communities encouraged me to preserve in the sport and continue to explore an even greater area around Edmonton. My whole world expanded when I turned 16, got my driver’s license, and drove to the mountains for mountain bike racing. From there, I discovered so many more activities that can be done... in the mountains: scrambling, rock climbing, and backcountry skiing just to name a few. As a fortunate coincidence, one of the courses I took as part of my undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at the University of Alberta was an introduction to rock climbing. From there, I met other climbers at the University of Alberta and just got hooked! Head to our website to learn more about Cody! Congratulations to the winner of the December Humans of YEGACC Contest: Trudy Nastiuk! Here’s what they had to say about this photo from the Rockies! We are new members of the ACC and spent the first weekend of December in the Jacques Lake Hut. Our second night there, we were treated to one of the most stunning sunsets I have ever seen. The sky came alive and for a few moments, our entire world turned pink. It was truly a magical moment and a reminder to see the world throug...h rose coloured glasses - especially during times like these. Check out the link in our bio to submit a photo or memory for the January contest. As January marks the start of a new year, we want to take a moment to look back on your favourite memories from 2020 for this months theme. Enter for the chance to win a YEGACC toque and two passes to our new Ice Wall that opened yesterday! . . #mountains #jacqueslake #acc #explorealberta #rockies
Come climb our wall!
As the year draws to an end, we would like to congratulate two of our Edmonton Section members for being (the well deserved) recipients of the Alpine Club Don Forest award. The Don Forest award is awarded to nominees who have made significant contributions to the club by being on a committee or project, contributing to a large club undertaking or furthering the aims of the section/club. Jonathan Wolf and Tim Hankinson were the recipients of the Don Forest awards this year (n...ominated in 2019 year, received in 2020). Jonathan is very involved in the ACC Edmonton section and is keen to share his knowledge with other members. Jon was instrumental in the development of the Ice Progression Program (IPP) in 2019, and also volunteers at the urban climbing nights (performing belay checks and teaching classes). Tim has been tireless volunteer with the ACC Edmonton section, leading various projects. He has served on the board for three years and has continued to find time to lead club trips. Beyond the development of the Rock Progression Program (RPP), Tim also organizes the RJF climbing nights and ski nights within our city. Tim has also been the driving force in the development making the ice wall a reality in Edmonton. Thank you to Tim and Jon for their contributions! Volunteer nominations for 2020 are open until the end of December. Please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator Danielle ([email protected]) if you have anyone you would like to nominate. You can find a full list of available awards, criteria, and past winners here: https://www.alpineclubofcanada.ca//C/Volunteer_Awards.aspx
