Sometimes, when you are just working day-to-day, you forget why you first started your business and then something triggers a reminder. This month, it was finishing a client's financial statements and tax returns just five days after their year end. FIVE DAYS! When Dan and I were just grunts working towards our CPA designations, it used to take months to get all the records in, process the transactions, send a draft back to the client for comments, and finally file the actual... tax returns. When you do things you're not trained for.... M+M partner Ian Stanley-Maddocks tried mountain biking for the first time. Clearly, it didn't go so well, and clicking his mouse is now a lot harder. Even though it was just vacation fun, it brings up an important lesson: when you do something you're not trained on, you tend to get really bad results. Mountain biking was supposed to be fun and easy, but instead it was painful and will take months to recover from.... The same concept applies to setting up accounting software and administration systems. There are really great software tools out there that can make admin almost fun because it becomes smooth and fast. But, if you don't know what you are doing (particularly during setup) the process is painful and initial errors can take months to straighten out. So, before you jump into a new accounting software program, talking to someone who can help you navigate your first moments without wrecking your systems. It's much more fun to go smooth and easy. Final pro tip: don't grab your front brakes too hard.
