How can you become a better ally for diversity and inclusion and take action? 1.) Listening 2.) Confronting dismissive attitudes in conversations 3.) Showing up to amplify voices at a rally... 4.) Examining barriers that exist in policies and processes that you have influence over Inclusive practice is both an individual action towards treating one another justly and a collective effort to support diversity and inclusion in all places. Community Leagues are hubs for Edmontonians to get to know their neighbours and build vibrant, welcoming places for all. Empowering Leagues to effectively and efficiently do this is the #1 goal identified by the city’s Leagues in our 2020 member survey. Currently, under the existing Tripartite License Agreement, Leagues are not permitted to have commercial use on their licensed land. The unintended and unfortunate result is yoga classes, kids programs, art workshops and cou...ntless other recreational activities, need to be administered entirely by League volunteers or part-time staff. This puts an unnecessary burden on just a few community members to find the time and energy for coordination, ultimately limiting how much programming is available to neighbours. Under the Municipal Government Act's Community Organization Property Tax Exemption regulations, Leagues can provide their space for commercial use for 30% of the time. This amendment to the Tripartite, going to Council next week, would allow Leagues to explore this option. We’re encouraging City Council to simply streamline the process to enable more use of this valuable resourcea one-of-a-kind resource Edmontonians enjoy. (That’s right, Community Leagues don’t exist in most cities worldwide). Community Leagues are distinctly Edmonton! Leagues will still be bound to ensure their land and facilities are only used to support the neighbourhood. All activities will continue to be required to champion community interests and needs. An amendment to the Tripartite agreement will entrust each Community League to more easily provide relevant programs and recreation promoting the well-being of their residents in a timely and responsible manner. https://www.cbc.ca//city-council-edmonton-federation-of-co
