The YELNAT tournament committee introduces the Colby Sweet Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is dedicated to Colby Sweet, a player who loved the game of hockey and the camaraderie that results from team work and fair play. Hockey was of great importance to Colby during his childhood and provided many fond memories for him and his family. Colby’s father, Trevor, is also an avid hockey fan and a founding member of the Yelnats tournament over 20 years ago. This scholarship honors a hockey player whom embodies the same passion for hockey as Colby. This scholarship is available to all third-year midget (U18) players registered in Cochrane Minor Hockey Association in the 2019/2020 season. Yelnats Cup Midget Hockey Tournament 01.01.2021

It is a tradition at Yelnats that we honour our third year players. They have spent many years in minor hockey growing from Timbits to the fine, young people that we see today. We have asked our Yelnats grads to share their hockey experience and today we honour grad: Mario Novello I am Mario Novello and I started skating at 3 and playing hockey at 4. My hockey life started with Cochrane Minor Hockey in Tyke. After all these years of playing rep and 1 year of RHL, I would s...ay hockey is the sport I am most passionate about. My Mom made me try other sports throughout the years like soccer, basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, baseball and probably more but hockey is my sport. Some of my fondest memories were all the road trips, playing mini sticks everywhere and winning banners in Novice and Bantam. I have had many influences, great coaches and made so many friends during my hockey years. My favorite team is the Calgary Flames and most influential player for me was Jarome Iginla and my most influential coach was Jamie Spademan. As I am only in grade 11 now I will definitely continue to play hockey either beer league or a rec team. After High School I am leaning towards SAIT’s Mechanic program but still undecided. My parents were always my biggest fans and I thank them for that! See more
