Yes You Can HAND DRUM

I am getting alot of requests to do hand drum workshops for groups lately. Which I am very happy about. If you have a group and are interested, please inquire further. I have 14 assorted multicultural drums including djembes, bongo, dun, doumbek, talking drums, and a variety of interesting percussion instruments to share. Most drums are Djembes. Participants in workshops are invited to bring any hand drums they have to play with as well, which can open the door to big...ger groups. Special arrangements can also be made for me to rent drums in order to accommodate large groups, schools or corporations. Deb Brown, from Yes You Can Hand Drum offers PLAYful Hand Drumming adventure workshops, and can tailor content to suit any group of adults or children. Deb has also operated many drum circles for organizations looking for positive activities to offer their members, including those with physical or mental health challenges. Hand Drumming is something that all cultures enjoy, each in their own way. The one thing they all have in common is that hand drumming is always done in a circle, and is always inclusive. It is not only about making sound, but also about listening to each other. Each "Yes You Can" HAND DRUM workshop offers participants the opportunity to PLAY as we explore the joy of hand drumming! Workshops can be designed for those with or without drumming experience. Deb's favorite drum is the Djembe. She often does djembe focused hand drum workshops, which explore djembe drum techniques, well known West African djembe rhythms and patterns, individual hand drum creativity and group activities, rhythm creation and some free jamming time on the drum. When appropriate Deb teaches how to read drum notation, and or how to create your own drum rhythms. Each djembe workshop builds skills and confidence with hand drumming, while having alot of FUN. These workshops are for those who already have their own djembes. Or, Experience PLAYful "multi-drum" workshops, which encourage self-expression, creative confidence and group harmony in a light hearted and inclusive way. We will focus on intuitive drumming and freedom of expression, including individual and group activities, while also exploring some basic hand drum how-to’s and techniques, touching on some simple drum rhythms, and encourage the use of percussion instruments to compliment the drums. Hand drumming is far more than making music, it is also an instrument which nurtures individual creativity, self-expression, emotional healing, connection, community and co-creativity. Plus its a lot of FUN! In a drum circle, although each person and instrument is different, each is equally beautiful, equally welcome, and equally valuable. UPDATE re JULY 19th Djembe workshop: Really looking forward to drumming again! In order to respect the social distancing required due to COVID situation, this workshop will only have space for 9 people, and will run from 1-3 pm, with no potluck break (which we usually do). Please bring your own water or tea in a thermos. Hopefully the weather will be lovely, and we can look forward to an outdoor circle in the beauty of the forest and trees surrounding my home. Hey drum buddies, I am having to cancel/postpone the planned May Hand Drum circle due to Covid. I have scheduled a workshop for Sunday, July 19th, and hope everything is a go for then. I also hope to host a drum gathering sometime in August, maybe an evening event??? Maybe daytime. Will let you know. And there will be more drum workshops offered in the fall. ............. For those of you who have prepaid for the April and May workshops which have now been postponed, we... can apply your credit to future drum workshops/circles. I hope you are ok with this, if not please let me know. Also, I am open to your input re if the July 19th date works for you, if not it is open to change it to another Sunday in July. And I am also open to your input thoughts re August dates ........... Hope you are all still finding the time and motivation to pick up your drum and feel the rhythm. Last night I invented a rocking drum rhythm, really enjoying it. Inspired by ZZ Top's song "Le Grange". I have the main pattern fixed in my memory now, and am working on developing some accompaniment patterns, and am going faster and adding "in between" notes. It sounds awesome, definitely rocking it!! I have no idea what timing it is, and couldnt possibly write it down as notation, but this new rhythm will now be one of my favorites, I look forward to polishing it, ...and oneday playing for you..... I encourage all of you to create your own rhythms and work them, - build off a song you like..... be FREE, enjoy the gift of rhythm. Listen, feel, and respond...... YES YOU CAN!!!

Due to current circumstances, our upcoming YYC Hand Drumming workshops will be postponed until the Covid virus has subsided. The April 19th workshop is definitely not happening. The May 24th workshop may still happen, we will have to wait and see how things are going and decide closer to that date. I am proceeding based on the expectation that by mid summer or fall the virus danger will subside, and I will coordinate a couple hand drum workshops then. People who have pre...paid for the April or May handdrumming workshop will be able to apply the prepayment to these future workshops. I hope you feel this is fair. ........ And until we meet again, I hope you are all doing a bit of hand drumming at home, drumming is a great way to manage stress, and find joy in the midst of whatever life throws our way.
