As a kid, you probably never imagined yourself living on the street. But if you get there, what does it take to turn things around? For the youth and families homeless right now, it takes help from you. Please give to help the youth and families who are homelessness right now in Peterborough. #givingtuesday #ptbo #downtownptbo #homelessness #shelter https://yesshelter.ca//what-homeless-kids-need-this-chris/
Messages of love and support are flowing in for young people and families in shelter over Christmas. Here are a few of the messages our amazing supporters have sent young people this holiday season. . If you want to support youth and families experiencing homelessness right now, donate at www.yesshelter.ca . To our amazing community -- Merry Christmas, from all of us at YES
Thanks to you we’ve been able to provide holiday gifts to 20 youth in emergency shelter, 24 youth in our RISE Youth Housing Program and 12 families in emergency shelter. It is wonderful to be able to brighten the holidays for our kids and neighbours who are struggling. You did this by responding to our wish list. THANK YOU BDO Ptbo, RBC Ptbo, Baker Tilly Kawarthas, Brink's, Wild Rock, Cambium Environmental, Engage Engineering, Victory Garden Supply, Cuddles for Cancer, Dave Smith, Downtown Peterborough, Kawartha TV & Stereo AND all of the other businesses that dropped off goodies anonymously AND of course all of the many community members in the YES Family, near and far who bought stuff for youth and parents from the wish list. Thank you.

In From the Cold update!
Our local Home Depot in Peterborough has been a major supporter of the YES for 6 years through the Orange Door Campaign, and other in-store initiatives. Recently, they provided us with $1000 in gift cards, to use for repairs and renos around the shelter and the RISE Youth Housing Program . There are two days left of the Orange Door Campaign, where you can donate to YES when you cash out at Home Depot on Lansdowne. Please consider Home Depot for your holiday shopping this year, and donate to help youth and families through homelessness at the till. Thank you
Peterborough, did you catch the In From the Cold Radio Special? What did you think? We thought it was just, incredible. Additional incredible thing: The In From the Cold fundraising campaign is ALMOST at it's goal of $8000. If you enjoyed the show, can you help us get all the way there? https://www.canadahelps.org//p/in-from-the-cold-christmas/ IF YOU MISSED THE SHOW: It will be playing again, at 8am Christmas Day - Trent Radio 92.7 - the perfect Christmas morning soundtrack.
"Housing First" recognizes housing as a basic human right and that every person deserves housing that is safe affordable and appropriate.
We are a part of an incredible community of people and organizations. Thank you Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough for supporting this community in such profound and important ways.
In order to achieve stability in their lives, youth need more than just food and a bed. They need to have opportunities for social inclusion and things that protect their mental wellbeing.
Exciting In From the Cold is a highlight of our year, and we're thrilled to be a part of it again (in a new way this year).

In my experience, the majority of our most challenging mental health and addictions patients lacked adequate housing, says Kayhan. Without safe and stable housing it is almost impossible to achieve stable mental and physical health.
Thomas Fischer started working at YES in 2017. He was a well-loved member of the team by staff and clients. He was known as a genuine person, a great listener and communicator, and a lover of music. Tragically, Thomas died in 2018. One way we remember him is through the Thomas Fischer Staff Award. It's a way to think of Thomas, and recognize YES staff who have demonstrated the four pillars of the work we do at YES - Advocacy, Dignity, Compassion and Equity. Values that Thoma...s demonstrated and inspired during his time here. If you know a YES staff member that has helped you through a tough time, was kind to you at a time you truly needed it, has advocated for you, or just listened to you when you needed to talk, consider filling out this form, and nominating them for the Thomas Fischer Staff Award https://forms.gle/EoRnGFyktHhG8Hx59 Nominations are due Oct. 14th! Thanks all.

Orange shirt day began in 2013 as a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school in Williams Lake. It grew out of Phyllis Webstad story of having her new... orange shirt, given to her by her grandmother, taken away from her on her first day of school when she was a 6-year-old girl. The date, September 30, was chosen because that is when children were taken from their homes to go to residential school. Orange Shirt Day has grown since the story first came out and is now an opportunity for all to hear/remember what happened to all children who attended residential schools. It is a day for survivors to recount their stories and to know that they matter and that we must ensure that it will never happen again which offers hope to all those generations to come. Every child matters, no matter the age. These pins were made with the Nogojiwanong Mamawi Kendaasang Facebook Group
We know LGBTQ2S+ youth are dis-proportionately represented among homeless populations, and are more likely to experience violence and exploitation, health challenges, precarious housing and hunger. Peterborough Pride is a way for us to show our support for the LGTBQ2S+ people in our community and advocate for increased support. Even through COVID-19, flying the pride flags help to diminish the stigma and harassment that LGTBQ2S+ people are far more likely to face.
A whole lot of things needed to be sorted out in my life before I was going to be able to be successful. . ‘Back to school’ isn’t the same for everyone. For youth who have drifted away from school because of homelessness, it’s a lot different. . Find out how to help: https://yesshelter.ca//back-to-school-is-different-for-ho/
