The May/June 2020 Issue Is Available Online: http://yishu-online.com/back-issues/view/?113&issue=current Editor's Note... Yishu 98 opens with an extensive text by Lu Mingjun that speaks to the year 1979, not only as a pivotal year for contemporary Chinese art, but also for the world as a whole relative to the changing social, political, and economic dynamics of globalization. Following this is a text by Xinran Guo, who focuses on two paintings and poses the question of how one categorizes artworks from different cultural backgrounds within this globalized world in which borders increasingly are more indefinite. Alexandra Grimmer presents a conversation with painter Liu Ye and brings to light the idiosyncratic aesthetic and conceptual undercurrents, ones that are not always clearly evident, that are embedded in his work. Penny Xu discusses the work of Beijing-based artist Lí Wei, who was included in an ambitious exhibition exploring the mirror, and shows how this work was distinct within a European curatorial context. Over the past two decades, Yishu has tracked various forms of performance art, and Laia Manonelles Moner explores three decades of the work of Yingmei Duan, whose early formation as an artist was in Beijing East Village in the mid- 1990s and who developed an ambitious practice in the ensuing years based upon her experience both in mainland China and Germany. In conclusion, Leora Joy Jones speaks with Martin Guinard, co-curator along with Bruno Latour, of the 2020 Taipei Biennial. Their discussion covers issues not only about biennials in general but also how they can bring together local and global concerns, and how they don’t have to be reinventions but can create continuity that advances ideas upon ideas.
