It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of longtime high school teacher Maureen Tonge, who passed away earlier today. Maureen, who most recently taught Fine Arts at École Sir John Franklin High School, lost a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by family and friends. To all YK1 families: In mid-September we announced that 2020-2021 school pictures would be delayed indefinitely. At this time, YK1 plans on honouring its existing agreement with Lifetouch Photography, but only once a plan for them to enter the territory and our schools safely has been approved. To all YK1 families: In collaboration with other local school boards and First Transit, YK1 has ordered additional school buses for K-7 and high school students to accommodate families on wait lists and families expecting to buy passes for the winter. First Transit is in the process of recruiting bus drivers now, and will transport buses to Yellowknife as soon as possible. YK1 is hopeful that the additional buses will be ready by mid-November. To all YK1 families: First Transit will be selling more bus passes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. from September 16 to September 25, 2020. People can drop in if they want (no appointment necessary) but they should call first to ensure that the route they'd like to purchase a pass for isn't already full (as some already are). To all YK1 families: Please let us know by Friday, September 18, 2020 if you are planning on purchasing a bus pass for your child this winter. YK1 is already working to secure more buses for the colder months and this will give us a better idea of how many additional riders to prepare for.
