Did you know that since 2000, the Yellowknife Community Foundation has awarded 332 scholarships? Meet Gillian, the recipient of the David J. Ramsden Memorial Scholarship in 2019 and the Rio Tinto Diavik Community Fund Scholarship in 2020. As a lifelong northerner, moving south for school was a decision I was willing to make in order to advance my career capabilities and position myself to return home with more to offer. The Yellowknife Community Foundation's decision to awa...rd me the David J. Ramsden Memorial scholarship in 2019, and the Rio Tinto Diavik Community Fund scholarship in 2020 was such a touching way for the north to give back to me during my time as a student. These funds allowed me to replace my nearly decade old laptop with a newer refurbished model - an investment that was critical as a pandemic closed my research lab and required me to work from home - it would have been a bad (but likely inevitable given 2020's trajectory) time for my ageing computer to fail.
