The Young Liberals of Canada in BC first proposed cannabis legalization at the 2012 Ottawa Biennial Convention. **Edit 2: The policy is still unclear. It clearly states you cannot have political affiliation to be ratified but has no rules to become a recognized club. Wh...en compared to other SU’s policy on this, it’s lacking substance and any form of procedure or clarification. *Edit 1: I spoke with the President of the STUSU and political parties can be recognized but not ratified. This essentially means they don’t get funding which I 100% agree with. They updated their website in respect to the recognized policy as there was confusion within some of the subsections. The intention of the STUSU are in good faith and are due to previous issues of political groups requesting funds from the SU which within their policy made it difficult to not approve. They linked the updated page below for those who are interested. Hello friends. I am disturbed by a policy that the St. Thomas University Students' Union passed last year to ban political youth organizations from being ratified on the STU campus. They are the only university to my knowledge that actually have a policy like this one. Below is my open letter to the STUSU. Please share this regardless of political stripe as this is an unfair policy that affects us all. To whom it may concern: Yesterday evening I was appalled to learn that STUSU passed an unfair motion last year to ban political parties from getting youth clubs ratified on the STU campus. This is extremely concerning and an attempt to block students on the STU campus from being politically engaged. Voter turnout in 2014 was less than half for campuses. The numbers are not in yet for this year, but since the overall turnout only increased by 3%, I doubt the campus numbers changed. It’s my understanding that your excuse for this is because you want to remain impartial as a Student’s Union as you think having campus clubs will affect your ability to advocate fairly. This is extremely false. As long as the process of being ratified as a political club is fair across the board and no favouritism is shown, then that will only be respected by any government that forms power. Another reason was so the Student Union is not funding these political organizations. I agree to that, and I would be very interested to hear if that has ever actually happened. If it has, please provide proof to this as I know it certainly has not for the Liberals anyway. If any other political party received money, I’d like to know as that is actually a violation of the elections act to accept donations from any unions or corporations. For that reason, that makes your reasoning based on funding political organizations invalid and actually illegal. I’ll direct you to section 10, paragraph 11 of the Young Liberals of Canada charter which reads the following: No campus club may accept donations of funds from a non-party organization, student union, or levee fund. That above attestation must be present in every political youth organization in Canada, or they risk taking responsibility of any single campus youth club breaking a politics fundraising rule, which makes the financial officer of the organization eligible for charges of political financing fraud. I will point out that in my 6 years of being involved in the Young Liberals, this is the very first time I have ever heard of a campus banning such club. This is incredibly unfair and certainly would not be common amongst other SU’s in New Brunswick or in Canada. That being said, I will be reaching out to the chair of the NBSA and CASA, should that be necessary, to support me on the reversing of this motion.
