I recently visited Joe Bailey from North Star Adventures in Yellowknife to mark the start of Small Business Week! Like many small businesses across the NWT, th...ey have demonstrated incredible resilience through COVID-19. We know times are still tough and our government will continue to be there to help them through this crisis. I encourage everyone to support our #ResilientSmallBiz and #BuyLocal, this week and every week!
During today's Question Period I asked the Parliamentary Secretary for Indigenous Services Pam Damoff to update the House on how our government is supporting In...digenous peoples in urban and off-reserve communities through COVID-19. By working with organizations like Arctic Indigenous Wellness Foundation, the Government of Canada is assisting First Nations, Inuit, and Metis here in the NWT and from coast to coast to coast.
On Orange Shirt Day, we recognize and honour the survivors of the residential school system here in the Northwest Territories and across Canada. To help ensure ...this legacy is never forgotten, our government has introduced legislation to make September 30th the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which will be observed as a statutory holiday for federally regulated workers. https://www.canada.ca//government-of-canada-introduces-leg
Our government, in collaboration with other orders of government and across sectors, has developed a new nation-wide mobile app to let users know if they may ha...ve been exposed to COVID-19. The app, called COVID Alert, is available to all Canadians for free download, in the App Store and Google Play Store. The app uses strong measures to protect the privacy and confidentiality of any data it collects and does not track a user’s location or collect personally identifiable information. COVID Alert is another tool Canadians can use to help slow the spread of infection, prevent future outbreaks and protect our communities as we ease restrictions and restart the economy. While the exposure notification app is voluntary, the more Canadians who use it, the more useful it will be in protecting our loved ones and limiting further infection.
Wishing everyone a very happy Canada Day this year!
