Our first sleigh ride this winter! With my 31 year old Norwegian Lyngen horse Valdres, Norway. (Sound on!).
Today is National Day of the Horse. Hold on tight.

I've had a few requests to share this experience again. This image is one of dozens I captured during the most profound event i have witnessed. I had a class of... "intellectually challenged" (autistic, Downs Syndrome, etc) youths at the rescue to interact with the horses at their own level & choice. This day the lead mare gathered the others around her, after which, one by one, each of the mares came over to these two autistic children, layed down & placed their heads literally in the girls' laps. Over the course of 20 minutes, all 5 mares performed exactly the same ritual; they would circle the girls 3 times, then lay down & place their heads in the girls' laps, then drift into a trance-like sleep. As the teacher & I were mesmerized by this spectacle, i gradually became aware of a quiet conversation behind me. When i finally snapped out of the trance created by what was unfolding before me, I turned to see the lead mare standing next to an autistic boy. As I turned, I found him carrying on a conversation with the mare. This boy was 16 years old, and had not uttered a single word in his entire life. I have held numerous discussions with those involved in equine therapy work, specialists in child development and other experts regarding this event; not one had ever so much as heard of such a thing, let alone witnessed it. The nearest explanation we've arrived at is that those on the autistic spectrum tend to vibrate at a substantially higher level than "normal" folks (I hate that reference by the way!). Horses naturally seek out higher vibes to realign their own energies & attune to those who can match their own higher frequencies. So essentially, the horses were exchanging energy on a level that those of us not on the spectrum could not possibly feel nor understand. We're missing out on so much ... In T'Li Cho, we say "masi cho", a formal thanks to those who have joined in the sharing of a story.
Most horses pass from one human to another - some horsemen and women are patient and forgiving, others are rigorous and demanding, others are cruel, others are ...ignorant. Horses have to learn how to, at the minimum, walk, trot, canter, gallop, go on trails and maybe jump, to be treated by the vet, all with sense and good manners. Talented Thoroughbreds must learn how to win races, and if they can't do that, they must learn how to negotiate courses and jump over strange obstacles without touching them, or do complicated dance like movements or control cattle or accommodate severely handicapped children and adults in therapy work. Many horses learn all of these things in the course of a single lifetime. Besides this, they learn to understand and fit into the successive social systems of other horses they meet along the way. A horse's life is rather like twenty years in foster care, or in and out of prison, while at the same time changing schools over and over and discovering that not only do the other students already have their own social groups, but that what you learned at the old school hasn't much application at the new one. We do not require as much of any other species, including humans. That horses frequently excel, that they exceed the expectations of their owners and trainers in such circumstances, is as much a testament to their intelligence and adaptability as to their relationship skills or their natural generosity or their inborn nature. That they sometimes manifest the same symptoms as abandoned orphans - distress, strange behaviors, anger, fear - is less surprising than that they usually don't. No one expects a child, or even a dog to develop its intellectual capacities living in a box 23 hours a day and then doing controlled exercises the remaining one. Mammal minds develop through social interaction and stimulation. A horse that seems "stupid", "slow", "stubborn", etc. might just have not gotten the chance to learn! Take care of your horses and treasure them. Written by Jane Smiley Happy Adventurous trails Lisa

Morning Mantra: "Learn the difference between your intuition guiding you and your trauma misleading you." Not everything demands an immediate response. Give y...ourself some space between what happens and what you choose to do and think about it. In that space, let go and listen. Listen without judgement, but with compassion. Listen for your inner voice, and listen to your intuition to craft a positive, effective response. Learn to feel more than think. Over-thinking is a result of your trauma. It shows you don't trust yourself. It's based in fear. Just stop for a little while and listen. Re-acquaint yourself with the beautiful, peaceful, intuitive person you are inside. #BeStillAndListen #BeHappy #BeHorsey #BeHippie #HorseHippie #MorningMantra #InspirationalQuotes

One giant leap! Repost #horsesplanet
TIGHT NOSEBANDS HURT HORSES There is no ignoring the scientific evidence: tight nosebands cause horses physical pain, and mental distress. If your horse wears... one, you should be able to get at least two stacked fingers under the noseband on top of the horse’s nose (as seen in the image). Measuring with side-by-side fingers, or on the side of the horse’s nose or other location won’t give an accurate reading, and may offer a false sense of tightness. In addition to causing pain and distress, overly tight nosebands don’t allow the horse to open their mouth in an effort to avoid rein cues that are causing discomfort or pain. Unlike dogs, horses don’t vocalize when something hurts, and preventing such silent, behavioural feedback from the horse may result in compromised welfare. Four years ago, my colleague Justine Harrison - Equine Behaviourist and I helped craft the message behind this infographic for the IAABC. The very talented Doggie Drawings by Lili Chin then took the message and did her magic. Thank you to all involved in helping to create this shareable message with the horse world. #horsebehaviour #horsetraining #fearfreecertifiedprofessional #clinicalanimalbehaviourist
Morning Mantra: "Faith and fear both demand that you believe in something you cannot see." You get to choose which one you want to believe. Faith is seeing ...the light with your heart. Fear is seeing the darkness with your mind. Faith believes that in spite of the circumstances, someday everything will make perfect sense. So for now, tolerate the confusion, smile through the tears, and keep reminding yourself that everything happens for a reason. #BeWillingToSeeTheLightWithYourHeart #BeHappy #BeHorsey #BeHippie #HorseHippie #MorningMantra #inspirationalQuotes See more

Just some food for thought!
A big giant thank you to this big giant amazing horse named Heza. On Friday during an OHSET training ( Oregon high school equestrian team) this horse refused ...to move. He just stood there, and stared. Something he has never done before he’s always very compliant. My daughters team coach went over to see what was wrong. My daughter also sensing something not quite right checked her watch and found out that she was having an SVT moment( super ventricle tachycardia) Her heart rate was 1 86 bpm. Much higher and she could’ve passed out or worse. She didn’t recognize that she was in trouble but her horse did. Because of his quick thinking we were able to get her heart rate down without incident. It’s amazing gentle giant actually saved my daughter. I will never be able to repay him enough for what he did for us that day See more

Just a horse and a cat becoming BEST FRIENDS
Inevitably, as soon as we start to extend ourselves, the are-you-good-enough-to-do-this gremlins start to come out to play. The excuse of not being good enough ...is a massively convenient one to draw on when you feel uncomfortable. After all, if you make the assessment that you actually aren’t good enough, it’s pretty much game over. You’re able to return to the place where the tea and chocolate is. And at times, let’s face it, that’s super appealing. The thing about not-good-enough though is that if there IS some validity in it in terms of needing to upskill or develop your understanding and abilities in a certain area, then it’s simply a sentence in your last chapter that informs how the next one is going to look; it’s not the end of the book altogether. If it does hold weight, the power lies in turning the I’m-not-good-enough-full-stop into theres-something-I-need-to-learn-or-master. The Itty Bitty Shitty Committee are masterful at convincing you that your not-good-enough concerns are nothing to do with skill and everything to do with intrinsic value. Don’t believe them. Being good enough is a decision to ongoing learning, showing up and incremental bites of progress moving forward. If you want to be good enough then you have to decide to be; acceptance and kindness to yourself in the moment, action in alignment with your higher vision and intention. Onwards.
