Simple Twist This simple yoga twist is a basic seated posture that provides a greater stretch to the hips, knees, and ankles while also working to relieve tension and stress. Stimulating and toning abdominal organs through the gentle twisting motion, this pose helps to detoxify the body, boost energy, and improve overall health - making it a great way to start or end any practice. How to:... 1. Sitting on the floor, cross your legs in front of you at the shins and fold your legs in towards your torso. If your hips are tight, place a blanket or bolster beneath you. 2. With your weight evenly balanced between your sit bones, align your head, neck, and spine. Begin to lengthen your spine, ensuring your neck, legs, and feet are relaxed. 3. Place your right hand on the floor behind you and bring your left hand to the outside of your right knee. Use your inhales to lengthen your spine, and on an exhale, gently begin to twist to the right. 4. Gaze over your right shoulder and twist only as far as you can go while keeping your head aligned directly over your tailbone. 5. Hold the pose for up to 10 breaths before exhaling as you come back to the center. 6. Repeat the twist on the opposite side. In our continuing effort to make our classes more accessible and easy to fit into your routine and schedule, each class recording will remain available for 48 hours after the class ends. Additionally, if you wish to sign up for a class that has already run, you can sign up for the recording afterwards if it is still within the 48 hour period where the recording is available. To access the recording of your favouri...te class, simply register in advance for the class as if you’ll be attending (recommended). When we see that you did not attend in real time, we will send you the link to the recording once the class is over. Savasana (corpose pose) Savasana is a practice of gradually relaxing one body part, one muscle, and one thought at a time. While it looks easy, it is a fully conscious pose that is aimed at being awake while completely relaxed, making it one of the most difficult of the asanas. Savasana sets up the conditions that allow one to gradually enter a truly relaxed state, one that is deepy refreshing in itself and that can also serve as a starting point for meditation. Helping to re...lieve mild depression, high blood pressure, headaches, fatigue, and insomnia, Savasana conditions the body to release stress and can improve senses of physical and emotional wellbeing! How to: 1. Gently lie back on your mat, either with your knees bent or extended out in front of you. Rest your arms comfortably by your sides. 2.Keeping your head centered on the mat, begin to observe your breath. Allow your exhales to invite a sense of calm into your body. 3. Allow your inner legs to roll outwards as you release all tension and relax completely. 4. Close your eyes and relax the facial muscles. Continue to bring attention to each body part, consciously relaxing every muscle from the head down until your physical body is at rest. 5. Stay in the pose for anywhere between 1 to 30 minutes. Designed by a woman named Daisy Lee, Radiant Lotus Qi-Gong is a special practice that takes the traditional teachings of Chinese and Tibetan healing movements and sounds, and makes them easy to understand for modern women of all ages. Cat-Cow is a gentle flow between two poses that warms up the body, brings flexibility to the spine, and prepares you for the rest of your practice. Matching both movement and breath, this simple sequence works to calm the mind and relieve stress while also helping to develop postural awareness and balance. Cat-Cow gently stretches and stimulates the back, torso, neck, and abdominal muscles, making it the perfect pose to incorporate into a warmup or relaxation sequence. How to...: 1. Starting on your hands and knees, ensure your wrists are directly below your shoulders and your knees are directly under your hips. With your fingertips pointing towards the top of your mat and your knees hip-width apart, center your head in a neutral position and gently soften your gaze downwards. 2. Begin by moving into a Cow Pose: As you inhale, drop your belly towards the floor while lifting your chin and your chest. Slowly shift your gaze up towards the ceiling as you draw your shoulders away from your ears. 3. On an exhale, transition into Cat Pose: Draw your belly into your spine and round your back towards the ceiling. Release the crown of your head towards the floor, careful not to force your chin into your chest. 4. As you inhale, return to Cow Pose before coming back into Cat Pose on your exhale. 5. Tree Pose (Vrksasana) Tree pose, one of the most well-known asana positions, is a standing and balance pose that aims to improve concentration, balance, and relaxation. It requires fluid breath and physical integration in order to root the standing foot strongly into the earth and reach the arms up towards the sky. Tree pose works to strengthen legs and core muscles, open the hips, and stretch the inner thighs and groin muscles - making it a great way for yoga practitioners o...f all levels to start or end any routine! How to: 1. While standing on your mat, root your feet into the floor and distribute your weight evenly between all four corners of your feet. 2. Begin to shift your weight into your right foot as you slowly work to lift your left foot off the floor. Straighten your standing leg while keeping a slight bend in the knee. 3. As you bend your left knee, bring the sole of your left foot up to your inner right thigh or onto your right calf. 5. Bring your hands up to your heart’s center as you press your foot into your thigh or calf, equally pressing your thigh or calf into your foot to help engage your core. 6. Slowly reach your arms up towards the sky and stretch them outwards like branches. You might work to bring your gaze up to meet your arms. 7. Stay in the pose for 5 to 10 breaths before lowering your left foot to the floor. 8. Repeat on the other side! Half Bridge Half bridge pose is a beginning backbend that helps to open the chest, heart, and shoulders while working to calm the mind. With the feet and head grounded to the earth while the heart is lifted upwards, this pose serves to bridge the gap between body and mind. Offering relief from stress, fatigue, anxiety, headaches, and insomnia, half bridge pose can be whatever you need - energizing, rejuvenating, or deeply restorative. How to:... 1. Lying with your back on your mat, begin to notice your breath as you bend your knees and plant your feet into the ground with your heels as close to your sitting bones as possible. 2. On an inhale, engage your abdominal muscles and press your lower back into the floor. 3. As you exhale, actively press your feet and arms into the floor and curl your tailbone upwards. With your head and mid-back connected to the mat, begin to lift the hips and lower back off the floor. 4. While making sure your knees are directly over your feet, push them forwards and away from the hips in order to lengthen the tailbone. 5. With the chin slightly lifted, hold the pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute before slowly rolling your spine back down to the mat on an exhale, vertebrae by vertebrae. 6. We can't tell you how excited we are to announce that Christine Felstead will be joining our roster of instructors this fall here at Yoga Grove! Have you ever dreamed of learning from a yoga expert in a small semi-private or private environment, where you can ask questions, interact directly, and develop a strong student-teacher relationship with them, truly being mentored along your yoga path by a renowned and highly-esteemed yogi? Yoga Grove provides the perfect environmen...t for this, and so we've decided to invite some of the top yoga instructors in the city to bring their wisdom and expertise here to our studio! Christine is most certainly one. In fact, she was voted "Top Yoga Instructor" in the 2019 Toronto Star Reader's Choice awards, and is nominated again for this year's award. She is a teacher of teachers, and some of our very own instructors here at Yoga Grove have trained under her, including AnnMarie Wolf, Jennifer Whyte and Andrea Raymond. Although I would call her a Master, she insists that she is still, and will always continue to be, a student. And through the conversations we have had, I can definitely attest to the boundless energy she channels into learning and continually evolving, and then sharing all she learns through her teaching and writing. Christine "invented" Yoga for Runners, that is, she coined the term and developed the program - she literally wrote the book on the subject! And she has trained countless instructors to carry on the lineage. Most recently, she has made her mark in the industry with her insights and instruction in aging gracefully through Yoga, focusing on strength, agility and mobility in our practice. Mountain Pose (Tadasana) Mountain Pose is the foundation of all standing poses, making it a great starting position or resting pose. Helping to improve posture, groundedness, stability, and focus, Mountain Pose requires an active awareness of all body parts in order to provide the basis for proper alignment throughout an entire practice. This pose has many benefits, including working to strengthen thighs, knees, and ankles, reduce flat feet, and relieve sciatica. How to:... 1. Stand with your feet parallel and hip width apart, evenly balancing your weight between them. 2. Squeeze your feet and shins in towards the center of your body, lift your kneecaps, and turn your inner thighs slightly inwards as you lengthen your tailbone towards the floor. 3. As you imagine a line of energy running up through your body and out through the crown of your head, pull your lower belly up and engage your abdominal muscles. Draw your shoulder blades together and, on an exhale, release them down your back. 4. Keeping your torso aligned with the rest of your body, balance the crown of your head directly over the center of your pelvis. Soften your eyes and let your arms hang down beside you. 5. Did you know that Jennifer Gillmor is not only an inspiring and highly experienced yoga instructor, but also an internationally acclaimed musician? "Music is my greatest joy and longest-standing passion. Engaging in improvisation is often a transcendental experience. It is my favourite form of meditation and means of bringing people together to have joyful, meaningful, and sometimes cathartic creative experiences. It is through music that I feel I can offer most to the world.... I aim to give back to others the supreme emotional and spiritual highs that music has given me. I seek to re-express beauty, truth and universal experience (positive as well as challenging) through sound. I aim to elevate, stimulate, entertain and alleviate." Jen's musical exploration has covered rich and varied territory. She is a multi-instrumentalist with a musical family that includes bass guitar, cello, didgeridoo, flutes, various percussion, jaw harp, and sample-based sequencing. She has performed and recorded in projects ranging from funk to folk, rock to reggae, music influenced by traditions of African and Celtic cultures as well as experimental projects that can draw few comparisons. She has composed and recorded for film, video, dance, theatre and multimedia projects. She has toured internationally and appeared in nationally broadcast music videos and on various local and national TV and radio shows. Jen discovered yoga in 1990 as a rewarding antidote to the stress of a very busy urban life and a way to balance her life-long commitment to fitness with mindfulness and meditation. Initially practicing Kundalini yoga, then Sivananda, she found a perfect fit in Flowyoga classes. After many years of practice, she completed YTT at Yogaspace in 2011. She continually expands her knowledge through advanced courses in yoga and massage, specializing in Thai Massage. We are thrilled to have Jen teaching Flowyoga at Yoga Grove!
