I cannot stay silent any longer. I am sorry it had to get to this point for me to speak my truth, be vulnerable and share. Black men, women and children are being dehumanized, oppressed, murdered and lynched in broad daylight and on film. It took seeing and discussing with Maria from @tinytales post to give me the courage to post myself. I questioned would I be on brand? Is this the space for me to use to speak up about Anti Racism work? Should I create a separate account fo...r such discussions. And I realized YES this is the space. YES I do need to use my space to speak my truth. YES I do need to be authentic and transparent with my followers. And NO, do not stay silent or shy away and be fearful. As a white woman who is the equity lead of their school and actively looking at my own privilege, biases and intersectionalities and doing my own personal work, I believe we as a white collective need to do more. We are the ones who created the white supremest systems that let the men who killed Amaud roam free for weeks before being arrested yesterday (1 who still has yet to be). We need to be the ones who stand with our allies to dismantle it. This is not America’s problem, this is a human problem. We need to listen to BIPOC stories, be humble, not deflect with white guilt or emotional weaponry. Do not relay on questioning people of colour for the benefit of your own knowledge. There are lots of books, blogs, webinars for that. We need to stop reposting images, quotes surrounding social justice issues and thinking that’s doing your part You need to take action. You need to dig deep and really do some reflecting. A young black man was shot and killed in broad daylight while going for a Sunday jog in 2020. A man named George Floyd was murdered by 4 police officers. Breonna Taylor was murdered by officers in her own home while she slept. Regis Korchinski-Paquet was thrown off her balcony by Toronto police and died. I cannot sit idle any longer, and these are not the only ones. There are many other stories we do not hear or as a white person can choose not to listen to. If anything I hope this makes you do more research. Check yourself. We have the privilege by being white to choose to disengage in race issues and equity work. But I urge you to reflect. To lean into the discomfort as a wise colleague told me. Take action. Sign petitions, make the calls and put in the work. Or like I did today signed up for Part 2 of 4 Big Questions About Racial Justice in Education! #blacklivesmatter #runwithmaud #blacklivesmatter #allyship #checkyourprivilege #runningshouldntbeadeathsentence #whitefragility #equityineducation #equity #hatecrime #amaudarbery #justiceforahmaud
