Yorkton RCMP have received numerous complaints relating to various frauds within their jurisdiction. In a vast number of these complaints the issue is an attem...pt to solicit and receive funds, and in most cases, fraudsters use alternative payment methods such as gift cards. Gift cards are a preferred method of victimization as they are virtually untraceable, universal across multiple jurisdictions and countries, and have a resale value on the black market. As a result, the Yorkton RCMP, in collaboration with the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, the Yorkton Business Improvement District, and a number of Yorkton businesses, have created a local fraud prevention initiative. Mayor Mitch Hippsley and members of the local business community attended the announcement today. Some of the measures agreed upon to combat this problem include: All local retailers will restrict the sale of high risk gift cards to a limit of $200 Any instances of purchases in excess of this amount will require a conversation with a manager to ensure the purpose of the gift card purchase Retailers will post signage at the point of display in addition to the cash registers, in attempt to notify customers of this new policy Retailers will also educate their staff on this policy, as well as the potential for fraud. For more information see the Yorkton RCMP Facebook page or contact the local detachment at 306-786-2400.

Yorkton RCMP: Cyclist Safety Good morning Yorkton! We hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather! The Yorkton RCMP have received numerous complaints from the public pertaining to road safety concerns for cyclists. We wanted to take this time to talk about some ways that drivers can improve cyclist safety. ... Here are some tips for drivers about how to coexist with cyclists: 1. Appreciate cyclist vulnerability (bicycles are a much smaller vehicle than a car) 2. Give cyclists at least three feet of clearance 3. Know the rights of cyclists (bicycles are considered by law a vehicle, therefore cyclists have all the same rights and responsibilities as a driver of a motor vehicle) 4. As a driver, consider the benefits of cyclists (one cyclist on the road is one less car, which can lessen traffic congestion) 5. Be aware of your environment (scan for other vehicles on the road) 6. Look before you exit your car (check your mirrors before you open your door) 7. Accept that cyclists are here to stay (as a great form of exercise and a way to reduce commuting costs, cycling is on the rise) Thank you Yorkton for your continued commitment towards keeping all members of our community safe! ^rl
