Supplier Tuesday At Yorkville Design Centre we’re in the business of designing beautifully appointed bathroomsas well as kitchensall the time. Hansgrohe is one of those plumbing suppliers that we recommend when you want your shower system to perform reliably for many years while continuing to look stylish.... If you prefer a system that comes with a little shelf for your products, avoiding the need for a shower niche or caddy, here’s a shower model we love that has one built right in. https://www.hansgrohe.ca//articledetail-raindance-select-e

Today’s Variation Monday is the idea of variation in design materials itself! We often find ourselves designing kitchens where the client wants to use a number of finishes in the same kitchen. We’re happy to accommodate their desires and work with coordinating the different materials in such a way that the entire design works together harmoniously.

Today’s Detail Sunday is all about what you see when you come around the corner. How big can a detail be? Huge! A three sided fireplace can make all the difference. When creating this kitchen renovation to open onto a new fireplace room addition, we required a focal point around which the design revolved.... What better element than the fireplace itself! Fireplaces can be designed as wall elementstwo-sided so they can be appreciated from two rooms or three sided, like this one, to provide a transition element. Stepping down into the fireplace room, a focal point in the whole design is provided and a magical moment transpires when you come around the corner.

Recipe Saturday Since having COVID-19, I really like a good lentil soup that is a little bit tart rather than bland, as others might prefer. I went looking for a recipe that had that astringent addition and I found this one filled with all sorts of unexpected vegetables.... It's the vinegar that provides my wanted tanginess to this recipe; but I think you could just as successfully use lemon juice in its place. This version is definitely worth a try! Welcome to Design Friday! Whenever I start a new project, it takes a few daysor, depending on circumstances, sometimes even weeksto get to know both the client and the house before I can begin to sketch a design. The plans and quick elevation of this typical old Toronto house that we will be renovating at Yorkville Design Centre are a good example of how I begin design once I have an idea.... As with every project, I’m interested here in creating spaces that are not only amenable but also give off a sense of love and warmth. I’m excited to hand these drawings to my colleagues who will be modelling the project with me in a 3D computer model so we can present to the client!

Choosing a mirror design changes the way a whole room can look. On today’s Variations Monday, we show two versions of a work-in-progress master ensuite in a large home. Intended as an in-home spa, the design is meant to exude both an opulent and elegant minimalist look.... The first mirror was considered too heavy for the desired effect as it visually competes with the composition of the vanity. We have revised the renderings to now have two mirrors, frameless and backlit. Together, these mirrors project the exquisite richness called for by our design and the client's intended wishes.

Detail Sunday When undertaking a full renovation of a home, one major cost that often isn't part of the initial plan is replacing the roofing material. Unless there are obvious leaks, homeowners rarely think about the state of their roof tiles. However, when it's time to renovate your home, most likely your roof needs restoration as well. With the detail they take, the quality engineered roofing materials from Enviroshake provide products that will serve your roofing needs... for a lifetime. Roofs take a real beating from the elements. It's no wonder that they can deteriorate unexpectedly. These problems won't happen to your new roof with the superior engineering of Enviroshake, offering industry-leading performance, durability, and longevity. Enviroshake products resist wind speeds up to 290 km/h, requiring no special installation processes to achieve this wind resistance. Furthermore, all Enviroshake products boast an unconditional Class A fire rating and allow less heat transfer than cedar or asphalt shingles, which can reduce heating and cooling bills. And if you regularly experience torrential downpours, you'll be happy to know that these roofing tiles have a virtually impenetrable rain resistance. Of course, what we at Yorkville Design Centre like best about the roofing products of Enviroshake is their exceptional beauty. Made from 3D images of real cedar and slate, Enviroshake products offer the most authentic look available in composite products today. When specifying roofing material, Enviroshake composite roofing tiles is the product of choice we recommend to our clients. https://www.enviroshake.com/products/

Well, the time has finally come, I turn 65 today. It's not really the celebratory birthday I had anticipated over the years. Having COVID-19 and not being able to go to the Yorkville Design Centre showroom really puts a damper on having a party including seeing my family. However, in thinking about birthdays past, I am reminded of the Estonian kringle that was always part of our birthday celebrations. Although I won't be having a kringle this year, I do like the idea that t...here is a recipe I can turn to from Cooking with Nico and Bianca (not Estonian names, so I don't know how they developed their expertise in making kringle). One thing's for certain, I have never had chocolate in my kringle! What a new taste sensation! http://chocolateoblivion.blogspot.com///kringel-bread.html Thomas Tampold

The effect of COVID-19 on the design industry hit home this week when we personally had to deal with COVID-19 at our office. As a result, we are all working from home until November 17. Having to communicate from home makes one realize how lucky we are to have cell phones and the internet. Without these modern conveniences, it would be impossible to carry on our design work while under quarantine. However, as a result of our real interconnectivity, our collaborative work h...as hardly skipped a beat. Nevertheless, what has suffered is the in-person meetings we regularly have with clients. We are grateful for the understanding and concern that our clients continue to show us during this unprecedented time. We look forward to being back at our beloved showroom on Wednesday. See you then!

On this Construction Thursday, we at Yorkville Design Centre want to acknowledge how nice it is to have a contractor working on our project who is thoughtful enough to make a movie of the installation of the massive skylight we designed. As this movie was made on his phone, you'll have better resolution watching it on a smaller screen.
