Diagnosis: Anterior Open Bite: the upper and lower front teeth are not in contact; the bite is open by (10mm gap) in the anterior - front teeth. Etiology: developmental during childhood. Thumb-sucking, chronic nasal obstruction, enlarged tonsils, obstructive sleep apnea. If your child is a mouth breather, be sure to investigate and rule-out theses causes. Stop the thumbsucking habit early (before age 2), and eliminate nasal obstruction to prevent permanent changes in bo...ne development, shape and angulation. Many of these issues can be dealt with if treated early. Start your childs dental check-up at age 2. I take mine to paediatric dentists. They ONLY treat children and are experts at identifying and treating or referring patients EARLY on. Treatment: After completion of skeletal growth (over age 19) Upper and lower jaw surgery. This patient also had expansion of the upper jaw to match the width to lower jaw/teeth, and genioplasty to ensure proper closure of the lips and the mouth at rest/respite without tension around the mouth.
