Despite the challenges facing our province, we are showing responsible fiscal management. The mid-year fiscal update projects a deficit for 2020-21 that is $2.8 billion less than last quarter even though the global health crisis, economic recession and low oil prices continue to significantly impact the province’s finances. Taxpayer-supported debt is expected to reach $97.4 billion by the end of the fiscal year, a reduction of more than $2 billion since first quarter. Total e...xpense is virtually unchanged from first quarter but up $5.4 billion from Budget 2020. This is for health care, personal protective equipment, municipal grants, financial supports to Albertans and businesses and stimulus initiatives detailed in the Alberta Recovery Plan. The revenue forecast is $41.4 billion, which is nearly $3 billion higher than first quarter. This increase is due to improved forecasts for non-renewable resource revenue, gaming revenue, investment income and transfers from the federal government. Snowy forecasts can mean traffic delays. Even if you’re stuck on the road and late for work, picking up your phone is still distracted driving. If you need to make a call, pull over. Otherwise, you could face a $300 fine and 3 demerit points. https://alberta.ca/distracted-driving.aspx

#DYK? Male grizzly bears typically enter their dens during a snowfall in late November. While bears prepare to hibernate, they focus on eating and drinking as m...uch as possible and may not be as observant as usual. It’s important to be bear aware right now: Make plenty of noise and travel in groups. Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs. Keep your pet on a leash. Carry bear spray where it's easily accessible and know how to use it.

We’re supporting clean technology development and emissions reduction with a $10M investment in the Lacombe Biorefinery. The facility will be the first in the world to showcase a made-in-Alberta technology called BioRefinex, which turns waste from agriculture and food processing into fertilizer and renewable natural gas. The facility will immediately support up to 80 construction jobs and about 25 full-time jobs in Lacombe and Calgary. It will be 100% sustainable and cut abo...ut 40,000 tonnes of emissions each year which is the same as taking 8,500 cars off the road. We have committed $750M in total funding for projects like this through the industry-funded Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) system fund and other public funding. This investment will directly support 3,400 jobs and up to 8,700 jobs when investments from industry and other funding sources are included, with a total of $1.9B being injected into the economy.
