When I taught high school students with severe emotional issues, one of the most common complaints expressed by parents was that their child did not confide in ...themthat they had no idea what was going on inside their kids’ heads or hearts. One of the most common complaints I heard from my students was that their parents did not listen; they overreactedand admitting their struggles to their parents would only lead to more criticism. I suspected reality was somewhere in the middle of the parents’ perspective and the young person’s perspective, so I offered a tool that could bridge that gap. During our conference, I told the parents to think about a person in their lifetime with whom they felt comfortable in sharing their struggles and triumphsnoting it could go as far back as childhood. I said, Now think about what that person did or said that made you feel safe to open up. What do you hear? What do you see? When they got home from our meeting, I encouraged them to try to emulate that person. I said, No matter what response you receive from your child, just keep imagining yourself as this steady, encouraging confidant. I sent parents off with a list of words and actions that SHUT DOWN connection and a list of phrases that OPEN UP connection. The lists read: SHUT DOWN WORDS: I can’t deal with you right now. Stop being so dramatic. Just stop. Enough with the crying. Why can’t you just listen? It’s always something with you. SHUT DOWN ACTIONS: Suggesting you have to fix the problem for them Acting like their trouble is your burden Suggesting they’re going to owe you for helping them Being distracted, uninterested, or critical when they speak Failing to remember that mistakes come with the process of learning & growing. OPEN UP PHRASES: I can see this is really troubling you. How can I help? Let me see if I understand This is a tough one. Let me think on it for a bit and we'll see what we can come up with together. You’ve already done some initial problem-solving when you ______. Thank you for trusting me with this. You are not alone. Equipping the parents of my students with this connection tool did not always create positive change; many of the students who’d lived a lifetime of failure remained closed upbut I’ll always remember the ones that didn’t. What did you say to my mom? one of my toughest to reach students asked me about a week after our meeting. I looked at him questioningly, not sure what he meant. I thought she’d stopped caring, but I guess I was wrong, he said with a small, hopeful smile. It’s quite amazing what we’re able to communicate simply by choosing responses that OPEN UP rather than SHUT DOWN. You might not be able to SEE a difference but please believe that under the surface, your effort is being noticed and the reason for the effort is love. Love doesn’t give up.
