COVID-19 Testing Update: January 29, 2021 Today’s numbers appear to present a jump in the number of confirmed cases. This is due to a reporting change on the epidemiology dashboard. The total number of confirmed cases now includes a new category: NWT residents that are out of territory. These are residents that contracted COVID-19 while out of territory. Previously these cases were not included in the dashboard as these individuals were never physically in the NWT during the ...period that they had COVID-19. Since the beginning of COVID-19, there have been 4 of these types of cases, and the dashboard is now retroactively being updated to include these, resulting in the total case count increasing by 4. For a more in-depth breakdown of the total number COVID-19 cases, please view the epidemiology dashboard here: https://nwt-covid.shinyapps.io/Testing-and-Cases/?lang=1 Testing information is available 24/7 on the GNWT's COVID-19 website homepage: https://www.gov.nt.ca/covid-19/en Public Health Advisories are available on the GNWT HSS website: https://www.hss.gov.nt.ca/en/advisories
As announced earlier today by the Federal government, the GNWT is expecting a reduced shipment of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. 4,700 doses will be delivered next week instead of the anticipated 7,200 doses. The shipment scheduled for the third week of February will also be impacted, but we are still waiting for exact details from Moderna. Updated guidance from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommends the second dose be given between 28 and 42 days after the... first dose. The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is reported to be 92% efficacious after the first dose. Over the next week, the GNWT will continue delivering second doses to long term care residents and staff within the 28-day timeframe using existing vaccine from the first and second shipments. Second doses to other priority populations will be delivered closer to the 42-day timeframe to maximize vaccine supply. Due to the declared outbreak at the Gahcho Kué winter road site and the increased risk of exposure from southern workers, NWT rotational workers will be offered first doses of the vaccine over the next week. NWT resident rotational workers with increased risk of exposure include: mine workers, winter road support staff, and medevac pilots. Any vaccine clinics scheduled this weekend will go ahead as planned. All remaining doses will be conserved to deliver second doses to priority populations. Outside of rotational workers mentioned above or previously booked appointments, requests for first doses are being put on hold until delivery dates and quantities for future shipments are confirmed by the Federal government.
