September gardening checklist: Collect seed and herbs for drying. Add compost or manure to garden beds. Cover water features with netting to collect falling leaves.... Check houseplants for pests, then start to move indoors. Plant new trees and shrubs, to give them at least six weeks before frost. Plant spring-flowering bulbs. Clean bird feeders, gardening tools. Continue watering trees and shrubs until the ground freezes. Bring in any clay pots. Pull weeds before they go to seed to reduce the number of weeds next year. Fertilize your lawn. See more

"September is the month of maturity; the heaped basket and the garnered sheaf. It is the month of climax and completion. September! I never tire of turning it over and over in my mind. It has warmth, depth and colour. It glows like old amber." Patience Strong (1951), The Glory of the Garden

Populations of many pollinators have declined seriously across North America. The good news is that we can all make a difference by practicing pollinator-friendly gardening. Here are some ways you can encourage pollinators in your garden: Plant native and pollinator-friendly plants that provide food and nesting materials.... Design your flower gardens so there is a continuous succession of plants flowering from spring through fall. Supply water. A shallow saucer or birdbath with a flat rock in it makes an ideal location for butterflies and other pollinators to land. Replace the water daily to prevent mosquito larvae from hatching. Provide shelter. Windbreaks make it easier for pollinators to land.
