Uterine / Fundal Massage Immediately after baby is born and the placenta has been delivered a nurse or doctor will massage your uterus a few times. Health care providers will continue to do this every 15 minutes for the first 2-3 hours after delivery. This procedure can feel invasive and it’s quite an odd feeling. Many of my postpartum clients are concerned that their newborns are not getting enough food, and it’s hard because unlike bottle feeding you can’t see exactly how much baby is getting when they are nursing. So many mothers are concerned that their newborns are not getting enough during the early days, this Greta visual helps show just how small baby’s stomach is in the early days. This post is h...ere for those new moms to let them know there’s a difference between what a newborn’s stomach can hold vs. what it should hold per feeding. When we talk about the size of their stomach, we’re actually talking about how much colostrum (or milk) a baby removes when breastfeeding . Why is this important to know? When given formula early on, a baby might take in MORE than that amount (due to their natural instinct to suck), but that large amount is not necessary and can cause them to overeat. As a result they remove less colostrum/milk from the breast which can negatively impact milk supply The size comparisons above are great for visualizing approximately how much a baby should be offered or expected to take. The best way to ensure a good start on your breastfeeding journey is to nurse frequently and allow baby to remove milk from the breast to signal your body to produce more!
