Grade 5 students wrote in French about their favourite room in their house and created a diorama to illustrate their special room. So creative!

The students at OCS have been enjoying their outdoor classrooms since school began. What a joy to be outside as much as possible! Story by Mrs. Buisman, JK Teacher Mrs. Manouchehri's SK/JK class uses the outdoor classroom daily for French and Bible classes. Using the Outdoor Classroom allows us to sing our songs freely while increasing our time outside, says Mrs. Manoucheri. The children enjoy the outdoor classroom; they sit on individual foam mats which keep them off the ...ground. Being outside has provided some unique learning opportunities. For example, last week the class was just about to hear a story about a goose on a farm in French, when some Canada geese noisily flew by overhead. It was a timely moment to share the fact that Canada geese have a different French name than domestic geese, so the class practiced saying "les oies" and "les bernaches." Mrs. Vriend, who teaches JK and SK French, has also appreciated the benefits of using the outdoor classroom. She says, It’s especially helpful for singing the songs that reinforce concepts, such as days of the week, months of the year and sound songs. She also notices that the extra space makes it easy to transition to games that require more movement, such as Duck Duck Goose. All the Kindergarten teachers have welcomed using the classroom for music activities. Mrs. Buisman’s class has enjoyed playing rhythm instruments and singing songs for example, where they get to wave streamers without bumping into one another. In the beginning of the year, the tent was often used, as Mrs. Vedder pointed out. September was full of many beautiful days and it was a gift to allow the kids to soak up the sunshine. However, the tent has even been used during rainy weather. She adds, When I have fewer students, we go to the bigger tent in the field and put our waterproof pillows on top of the logs to stay dry. The wind and colder temperatures are already making it more challenging to use the outdoor classroom, especially for writing activities. However, even if it does not get used every day and season, all the teachers have enjoyed the unique learning opportunities that have been afforded by using this outdoor space. Originally the tent was set up in response to the COVID requirements of social distancing; however, the teachers see many benefits in setting up a more permanent structure for future and regular use at OCS. #greatschool

As heard in the JK/SK Class: The SK/JK class was outside during a free play gym time around the large play structure. Mrs. Manouchehri was watching the children. A couple of little girls were pretending to be crocodiles and were skulking behind the little tree near the bench. Then a "crocodile" boy approached her from the other side. Pretending to be surprised, she said, "Another crocodile?! I just saw one behind that tree!" The boy froze in alarm and exclaimed, "A real one?!..." (He was assured that it was too cold in Ottawa for real crocodiles!)
