Three pints of saliva: that’s how much the average healthy person makes daily and it is essential in keeping cavities away! However, there are hundreds of medications that affect the quantity and quality of your saliva leading to "Drug induced Dry Mouth." Dry mouth can also cause sore mucous membranes and gums, cracked lips, split corners of the mouth, and a rough, painful tongue make eating impossible. Here are some things you can do to help relieve dryne...ss and to keep your mouth healthy: 1. Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless hard candy to stimulate saliva flow. 2. Sip on water throughout the day. 3. Cut back on caffeine, tobacco and alcohol, which can cause dehydration. 4. Ask your dentist about using an artificial saliva spray. 5. Try to breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. #DryMouth makes your mouth more susceptible to #toothdecay and disease, so taking good care of your teeth and gums is essential: Brush your teeth in the morning and evening to help reduce mouth germs and fight plaque. Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under the gum line. Visit your dentist regularly. They can help you manage dry mouth, but also examine your mouth for early signs of tooth decay and gum disease. #yoursmile #dentalcare #oshawadentist #oshawa #DurhamRegion #dentaltips #familydentist #DentalImplant See more

Can Bad Teeth Lead to a Bad Heart? If you leave untreated cavities for too long, it can lead to gum disease (aka periodontal disease) Periodontal disease causes your gums to recede from your teeth, which creates a gap beneath the gum line where bacteria can hide and grow.... Although the connection is not fully understood, research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke might be linked to the inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause. To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene daily. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush using fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily. Eat a healthy diet and limit food with added sugars. Replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if bristles are splayed or worn. Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings. Avoid tobacco use. Also, contact your dentist as soon as an oral health problem arises. Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health. #oralhealth #yoursmile #oshawa #oshawadentist #DurhamRegion #dentaltips #valentinesday #familydentist #healthyteeth See more

DID YOU KNOW? Old fillings can actually be a breeding ground for new decay? Over time, as fillings weaken, cracks and chips can leave gaps between the tooth and the filling allowing the bacteria to enter and accumulate in these openings.... These small areas are difficult to clean and new #toothdecay can occur. With good oral hygiene and healthy habits, dental fillings can last for many years; however, eventually all fillings need to be replaced. At Your Smile Dental Care, we examine the condition of your existing dental work carefully so that problems can be detected and treated early. Don't wait until a tooth hurts or breaks. "Anything in life worth having is worth working for." But when it comes to changing habits, it takes effort, energy and it takes time. So here's a tip: Instead of exhausting yourself trying to implement a whole new oral hygiene regime all at once, introduce one new habit at a time. Once fully rooted, introduce another, then another. ... If it takes 30 days, 100 days or longer, a new habit, if you keep at it, becomes increasingly easier as you continue doing it. @yoursmiledentalcare.com

Your child’s baby teeth are at risk for #toothdecay as soon as they first appearwhich is typically around age 6 months. TIPS: For children younger than 3 years, caregivers should begin brushing children’s teeth as soon as they begin to come into the mouth by using fluoride toothpaste in an amount no more than a smear or the size of a grain of rice. Brush teeth thoroughly twice per day (morning and night) or as directed by a dentist or physician. Supervise childre...n’s brushing to ensure that they use the appropriate amount of toothpaste. For children 3 to 6 years of age, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Brush teeth thoroughly twice per day (morning and night) or as directed by a dentist or physician. Supervise children’s brushing and remind them not to swallow the toothpaste. @YourSmileDentalCare, we recommend that your child's #firstdentalvisit take place within six months after the first tooth appears, but no later than a child’s first birthday. Don’t wait for them to start school or until there's an emergency. SOFT vs HARD? It is a common misconception that an extra firm toothbrush will produce significantly better results than softer bristles. Harder bristles wear on the tooth enamel over time. The truth is that a soft one does the job just as well and it is your brushing technique, not the intensity of brushing nor the hardness of bristles, that is key to achieving results.... If you’re not sure if you’re brushing correctly, ask your dentist for a demonstration at your next appointment. #oshawadentist

FREQUENCY vs QUANTITY Although most people like to make their #Halloweencandy last as long as possible, it's actually healthier for your #oralhealth to eat it all at once or as quickly as possible. WHY?... Each time you eat sugary foods, the germs in your mouth form an acid that dissolves the #enamel over time creating cavities in the teeth. This is called an #acidattack. Saliva then tries to repair this damage. THE WORST CANDIES? The worst candy for your teeth are the ones that stay in your mouth the longest - hard and sticky candies (e.g., gummy bears, fruit snacks) get lodged in your teeth and are hard to wash away. BEST TIME TO EAT CANDIES? The best time to eat Halloween #candy is with meals or right after mealtime. PREVENTION The secret for healthy teeth is to take care of them all year long. If you have good habits (visiting your #dentist regularly, brushing twice a day, #flossing, and using fluoride toothpaste), Halloween shouldn’t be scaryat least not for #YourSmile See more

THE IMPORTANCE OF REPLACING MISSING TEETH Your teeth are designed to help you smile, eat, and talk. They work together and support one another while preserving surrounding bone and muscles. Loss of teeth degrades this function. Patients who do not replace missing teeth are more prone to developing tooth decay, gum disease, additional tooth loss, and bone deterioration.... SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION If you are missing one or more teeth or have loose fitting dentures, we can help you find a permanent solution. Our team of caring professional will be happy to help you schedule an appointment to discuss your oral health concerns to see if #dentalimplants are the right choice for you. This is Tracy's kitten, Morty who is reminding us that protecting your toothbrush in a highly trafficked family bathroom can be a challenge. In between uses, remember to: Do: Rinse it well with hot water after brushing and give it a good shake Store upright in a cup or holder to allow water to drain away from brushhead... Store it out in the open air and sunlight where it can dry naturally Ensure storage is discreet to protect it from other contaminants Close toilet lid before flushing if your toothbrush is nearby to protect it from the aerosol effect Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months. Dont: Put your toothbrush flat on your sink counter (even with the bristles facing up), you could still create a small pool of water where bacteria grows. Store in a closed container or cabinet that prevents drying and allows germs to grow easily Let toothbrushes touch each other even if they belong to other family members as germs on one brush can cross-contaminate another Don't let your toothbrush come in contact with any toxic cleaners that may also be stored in bathroom. #dentalcare #oshawadentist #yoursmile #oshawa #kidsdentist #DentalImplants #DurhamRegion #toothbrush #MortyTheCat See more
