Your Political Party of BC

I have had some people ask me how I am voting in the referendum and why... I am voting yes to PR and for Rural Urban Proportional first and Mixed Member Proport...ional second. Why you ask? Because I am tired of politicians who don't listen to British Columbians, tired of broken election promises, tired of seeing trust in politicians being lower than trust in used car salespeople. This all happens because under our current FPTP system power is concentrated in the premier's office. The leader of the party which forms government has a dictatorship in the legislature for 4 years. If your MLA speaks out against what their leader is doing, and tries to stand up for the voters in their riding, they are turfed from the party caucus, and they will not get the party nomination in the next election. This is a big problem because FPTP gives us safe seats, where it doesn't matter who the party runs, they will get elected because their signs are the right colour. Under Rural Urban Proportional, in the urban ridings, multiple candidates from the same party will be fighting for your vote in your riding. Each of them will be trying to do the best job of representing you and not just of toeing the party line. Parroting party talking points will lo longer be enough, candidates will need to differentiate themselves by having actual policy which benefits you. RUP is essentially the system proposed by the citizens assembly on electoral reform. Take the politicians out of it and the system suggested takes the most power away from parties and gives it to voters. The biggest criticism of STV (which was proposed by the citizens assembly) was the large rural ridings which is why RUP uses MMP in the rural ridings. There will be no closed party lists here in BC. If there are, the public will not stand for it and in the follow up election two elections from now we will be back to FPTP. If you are constantly complaining about the stupid things the government does, how we don't have ride sharing despite 85% of British Columbians wanting it, or about how tax dollars are constantly wasted under governments from either large BC party, it is time for something new.
