Today’s highlight is ‘A Unicorn, Obviously,’ by Gorellaume Watercolour & Ink on paper. Here’s a bit more insight into his piece! When Tedd asked me to do the poster for the first YILCO group show with him, I had to come up with an idea that would work both as a standalone piece AND as a primary image for the poster.... I wanted to do something weird, surprising, and different than what is usually seen in the Whitehorse arts scene, while at the same time making a strong statement about the collective. So I decided to paint a ground squirrel, which is not necessarily the first animal that comes to mind when you hear the word "BEAST"....but it doesn't mean they aren't fierce little critters. They remind me of all the illustrators that never get attention or recognition for their talent and effort. I added a rainbow in the background to show the playfulness and originality of the discipline, though not to say it's not serious buisness and hard work. My ground squirrel also has a unicorn horn : in the world of illustration and art, a unicorn is the nickname for a contract that is decently paid, with enough time and resources to do the best job possible, so basically something that you never see (or almost never see !). I spent 4 days on this watercolor and color pencil illustration, and paid a lot of attention to details, to demonstrate a variety of skills and a dedication to illustration as a discipline. Tedd, who did the layout and graphic design for the poster, added a heavy classical frame around the image to represent the ambition of our collective to have illustration regarded as a legitimate artform.
