Thank you to our shelter & crisis line staff & all frontline workers keeping our community safe today & every day!
We wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday!
Truth be told, when we are talking about violence against women we are most often talking about men. Last year in Ontario, 89% of women and children on OAITH's femicide list were killed by men known to them, including partners, former partners, fathers, brothers, sons, grandsons, friends, and uncles. Our shelters play a vital role for survivors of violence and give women who need it a place where they can turn. Despite this, most shelters in Ontario can’t cover their basic operating costs without fundraising. Text COURAGE to 41010 to donate $5-$25 and help ensure women will have a place to turn when they face violence. To donate locally, please visit ywcapeterborough.org
Were you a part of a local #communitygarden this season? Can you spare 5 minutes to take our survey and tell us about your experience? https://www.surveymonkey....com/r/WHM6C8Q Nourish greatly appreciates your feedback. Your answers will help us learn more about community gardens and gardeners in our region, and improve our growing programs! We would love to hear more of your garden stories, if you are willing to talk to us over the phone for 10 minutes, please leave your contact information in the last question and we will be in touch. #growingtogether #localfoodptbo #gardenstories #urbanag

Today our staff are honouring the International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women in support of the 17,000 women and children who access a shelter every year in Ontario alone. You can join us by using your social media as a platform to share your support for women and children facing violence. If you have a purple scarf, hang it somewhere people will see it and take a photo to post on social media. Make sure to tag Wrapped in Courage in your post, and use the hashtag #wrappedincourage. Let’s show women facing violence today just how many of us there are standing alongside them in support. Visit https://wrappedincourage.ca/ to learn more.
Last night we honoured a past WBN Member Judy Heffernan. It was amazing to hear all the stories about Judy. We also want to celebrate another amazing woman Co...ra Whittington who is the recipient of the 2020 The Judy Heffernan Award last night. If you would like to make a donation to this fund please see the link below. https://cfgp.ca/project/judy-heffernan-fund/

In Ontario, 1 in 3 women will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime. This increases significantly when she is a woman of colour or an Indigenous woman. You can help address this unacceptable fact. Text COURAGE to 41010 and give $5-$25. Your donation will be put in the hands of our shelters across Ontario who work every day to support all women facing life-threatening violence. To donate locally, please visit ywcapeterborough.org

"We need more than a return to the status quo before the #pandemic. We need the #prevention of #domesticviolence, greatly increased support services for survivors including children exposed to violence and trauma, and a system that provides accountability."
A new caregiver benefit also comes into effect Monday, after numerous calls since the start of the pandemic for added support for parents and others who are forced to miss work to care for a dependent due to COVID-19. The benefit applies to people who miss work because of school or daycare closures, whose children miss school or daycare because they have contracted the virus or may have been exposed, or those forced to miss work to care for family members who need specialized care that is unavailable to them due to COVID-19.
"This is just the right thing to do. People are dying, and it’s unconscionable that we would stand by and watch because stigma and confusion gets in the way I think this is an opportunity to bring forward our best humanity.
TO THE WOMAN WHO IS SLOWLY FADING AWAY To the woman who has lost her spark. To the woman whose get up and go, has well and truly gone. This is for you. This is to remind you whose daughter you are.... This is to remind you, that you don’t have to be everything to everyone, every day. You didn’t sign up for that. Remember when you used to laugh? Sing? Throw caution to the wind? Remember when you used to forgive yourself more quickly for not always being perfect. You can get that back again. You really can. And that doesn’t have to mean letting people down or walking away. It just means being kinder to you, feeling brave enough to say no sometimes. Being brave enough to stop sometimes. And rest. It starts the moment you realize that you’re not quite who you used to be. Some of that is good, some of that is not. There are parts of you that need to be brought back. And if anyone in your life is not okay with that they are not your people. Your people will be glad to see that spark starting to light up again. So, if you have been slowly fading away my friend, this is the time to start saying yes to things that bring you joy and no to things that don’t. It’s really pretty simple. #loveyourself See more
From all of us at YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, we wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
As girls approach adolescence, that openness to risk and failure becomes buried under an avalanche of biological and cultural signals telling them to be careful, value perfection, avoid risk at all possible costs.
"For two women to share the Nobel Prize in chemistry is unusual. Between 1901 and 2020, it has been awarded to 185 individuals, and only seven of them have been women. In recent years, the Nobel committees have been trying to increase the diversity of researchers nominated for the science Nobel Prizes, which have been criticized for historically overlooking the achievements of both women and people of color."
Just 2 more days!
