"Mother Nature" by Elena Bushan . "Living through a global pandemic, quarantine and lockdowns, businesses shut down were stressful times for many of us. The best way to relieve stress and anxiety for me was taking care of my mini indoor jungle, watching plants grow roots, new leaves unfurling, and enjoy beautiful blooms. It was healing. I've painted a self-portrait with wings on my back made out of my plants as almost like Mother Nature gives me wings and I can "fly and be fr...ee" doesn't matter how stressful things get around me. I used this idea to paint my mural for the BUMP festival in August. The woman on the mural represents Mother Nature, she has huge wings behind her back made out of plants, and she talks to the birds sitting on her hands. She is surrounded by golden sunlight and it looks like she is almost glowing. I used vibrant colors and I wanted this mural to be healing and uplifting. Only if you look down on her arms you can see she is bleeding and melting. We all know nature has amazing healing powers but we have to stop destroying our Earth and try to keep it safe. I hope my mural would lift spirits and lighten up people's mood." . Photo by Junette Huynh . #yycbump #yycbeltline #yycarts #yycmurals #muralist #muralart #mural #muralfestival See more

"Buffalo Nations Stand and be Noticed" by Nathan Meguinis . "The colours: red - Mother Earth, green - all plant life, blue - all in the water rain and sky, purple - thunderbird and is women colour, yellow - sun and is protection colour, black - something strong or powerful, white - holy being or something holy. The Buffalo with the Camp and simple landscape represents all the Buffalo Nations that hunted and lived off the Buffalo. The dragonflies represents the month of August... and also I wanted to tie the Beltline mural project with it.... during August and late July the dragonflies are in full effect and is a good to help time the changes in the seasons. Under them are traditional otter designs which are common design in Treaty7 territory. The riders are youth and elder riding together representing parenting, mentoring, and the balance. The women riding in front are holding Eagle staff which represents our traditional matriarch system. The horses are elongated to show that they are fast and powerful. The Lighting bolt painted on the horses represents speed. I used a very old style similar to the Chauvet Cave hand paintings but a contemporary spray can alley wall twist. The Calgary alley hand art on the horses represent Tsuutina yellowhand. The yellow hands are trained from young age to be helpers at ceremonies and to provide their services in helping and protecting. It never too late to be come a yellowhand. The black triangle with yellow cycle represents Mountains and the cycle are falling stars. Common Teepee design. The turquoise horse hoofs represents a great distance of travelling and also the linguistic Dene or Athabaskan dialect connection which range from the N.W.T, down the Rockies and then further down south with Navajo, Apache and even one tribe in Russia call the Kat people. The flowers are Dene flower design to represent growth. Grassdancer are the ones we send out to bless the grounds, to help find new camp area or recon. Stand and be notice Long ago to travel through other Nations territory they would ask for permission by making Themselves noticed by standing on high spot and waiting to be escorted in or permission to pass was given. The Grassdancer is standing to be noticed and holds a Eagle staff (Nation flag) that belongs Tsuutina Nation. I am the carrier the eagle staff. The other hand he holds a red pipe which is a women’s pipe.... The smoke from the pipe is the connection between old and new merged together to make the overall concept for Buffalo Nations stand and be Noticed." . "Look Within" by Marcia Harris . "My BUMP mural was inspired by the business behind the wall. When I discovered the wall I was to paint I immediately went in to meet the business owner and took a few photos. Later on I realized I needed to go back and take more inside shots as my ideas for the concept were beginning to develop. This was my first time doing a mural and I wanted to be excited about the design but also be confident that it could be executed properly with the tim...eframe and structure of the wall. As a painter I had just finished a series titled: Affected City Series which consisted of various exteriors and notorious landmarks in Calgary including Peters Drive In and Calgary Central Library. I thought that an interesting concept would be to do the reverse of that on an outside wall of an exterior. My final decision for the design was depict the inside of the Barber Culture Shop on their outside wall. The title Look Within is literal in the sense of seeing something exposed from inside out. However also metaphorically as a statement to discover truths internally. The title works on many levels in terms of how the viewer would choose to interpret it. My final plan is to now do a painting of this building with the mural on it to add to my series of Calgary exteriors and affected businesses." . #yycbump #yycbeltline #yycarts #yycmurals #muralist #muralart #mural #muralfestival" See more

"Love, Said The People" by Michelle Hoogveld . "Combining pop art with bold transitions of colour, ‘Love, Said The People’ creates a visual narrative of using ones voice as an expression of love. As the piece flows from geometric shapes into a gradient of turquoise, each circle is representative of the many thoughts and emotions that go through one’s mind. The image appears abstracted until one is at a certain distance from the wall, revealing the opportunity to connect with ...others in a reciprocal exchange, discovering more about oneself and others, in a conversation rooted straight from the heart." .
