Zanzibar Holdings is collecting Ponderosa pine cones in the Clinton and Loon lake areas. Seed will be used by the provincial government to produce seedlings for reforestation and ponderosa seed inventories are low. We will pick the cones and pay by the bucket picked. We use pruning poles and ladders and have a manlift for tall trees. We will also clean up branches afterward. Only the ends of the branches need to be trimmed off with the cones attached. Each one of our crews has both a designated "regular" first-aid person and a "COVID" first-aid person. This ensures that we can put safety first, in all aspects, from caring for cuts and sprains, to exposure control. The designated COVID first-aider is in charge of taking employee temperatures every day, keeping all trucks and rooms well-stocked with cleaning supplies, and ensuring all employees are using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). They are a resource f...or their entire crew about any questions that arise regarding the details of the Public Health Order that is allowing us to operate this season. All of our group in-person meetings take place outside, where we can ensure physical distancing. Here's a health and safety training session from yesterday in sunny Merritt. HOT TIP: A human armspan is close to 2m long (depending on your height and your resemblance to a chimpanzee, of course). If you're chatting with someone, check your physical distancing by making sure that there's a decent gap between your hand and theirs when you each stretch out your arms. Although it may look like Sierra and Alicia are reaching out for hugs, they're really each doing a quick arm swing to make sure they are appropriately distant from their neighbours.

You won't see us out and about in your community -- we are keeping strictly to our motels and our worksites. We get most of our food delivered, and only send out single individuals to run any necessary errands (following the strictest protocols, of course: mask, hand sanitizer, and physical distancing). If you see us driving in our trucks, we'll give you a friendly wave -- and you might not see it through the masks, but we are giving you big smiles, too. We are grateful to plant trees this season, and will do so safely in this COVID-19 environment. Once at work, we are diligent with requiring physical distancing and hygiene. Zanzibar provides masks, hand sanitizer, disinfectant, and hand washing stations for all our workers. Workers are trained in clear and specific COVID-prevention protocols, like truck cleaning schedules and frequent hand-washing procedures. Workers live and travel together in "pods" of 4, just like families. All our workers undergo a two-week period of self-isolation before being allowed to travel (only by car --- never by plane, train, or bus) to the worksite. Zanzibar has always emphasized worker safety, and we are continuing to do so during this COVID-19 pandemic. We are taking the collective health of our workers and local communities very seriously by ensuring our workers arrive healthy, remain safe and healthy while planting, and then return home promptly to their own local communities.
