Dental losses can severely impact a horse’s ability to graze and chew food properly. Improperly chewed food can increase the risk for digestive upset. In senior horses, the most common cause of tooth loss is periodontal disease. Due to their hypsodont (meaning high crowned teeth that continue to erupt) characteristics, horses are at risk to simply just run out of teeth as they get older. The natural chewing process also wears teeth down over time. The older they get, the more... likely it is that their teeth will be either gone completely or too smooth to provide useful chewing power. Here are some feeding management considerations for toothless horses and ponies. 1. Consider the type and amount of missing teeth. Incisors are important for grazing pasture, although horses without incisors still have some ability to grasp grasses of longer lengths. Molars grind and break down feeds. Quidding, or dropping of feed in a semi-chewed state, is usually a result of missing molars 2.Provide 1.5% - 2.5% of body weight in forage per day. For toothless horses, this requires replacing dried long-stemmed hay with an alternative fiber source. Here are some options: a) Provide pasture turnout if laminitis is not a concern. Pasture does not require as much chewing as hay and can serve as a high quality source of nutrients; b) Provide alternative fiber sources such as chopped hay, hay cubes or pellets, or beet pulp; c) Feed a designated complete feed that can be fed with or without hay. These can either serve as a replacement for just the forage portion of the diet or as the entire diet. 4. Feed a processed feed, either pelleted or extruded, as these are easier to chew and digest for toothless equines. Whole grains and textured feeds are not always suitable for those with missing teeth. 5. Feed in small, frequent meals to mimic the horse or pony’s natural grazing behavior, no more than 0.5% of body weight per meal. 6. Soak all grain and alternative fiber sources prior to feeding to help prevent choke. This also helps toothless horses and ponies drop less feed during mealtime. Continue to provide free choice access to pasture or hay if choke is not a concern as this encourages normal grazing behavior and helps to keep the gut healthy. See more

Feeding For Weight Gain The elite performance horse. The hard-keeper. The picky eater. Packing on the pounds is never easy when owning one of these types of horses. In most cases, the strategy must be to increase the amount of calories in the horse’s diet or improve the digestion of those calories. Note that certain medical conditions may require specific nutritional support, so be sure to consult your veterinarian and/or contact us in these cases. There are a few ways to ad...just the diet of your horse to improve weight gain. 1.Add calories by making changes to your horse’s current diet. Forage, particularly hay, can vary in the available calories to your horse depending on the type and maturity when cut in the field. But good quality hay can be hard to find and costly. The solution to this would be to add a higher quality forage source to replace a portion of your hay, such as Wrangler Pellets or Cubes. Forage helps to keep the hindgut healthy and is a more natural way of feeding for the horse. Grain products vary in calories depending on proportion of ingredients used to mix the grain. Choose a grain that is higher in calories per pound, such as Cadence Ultra. This is the easiest option to minimize the volume of feed needed and the complexity of adding supplements. It may also save you some money in the long run. 2.Add calories to the current grain with a fat supplement. Using fat, you can easily add calories without a drastic increase in the amount of grain your horse has to eat per day. You can accomplish this with ULTIMATE FINISH 25, 40 or 100. These options are easy to use and less messy than adding vegetable oils. If you are feeding multiple horses, you can tailor their calories to meet their individual needs. 3.Consider the form of grain you are using. The ability to digest the feed you are providing to your horse can be as unique as each individual horse. Ulcers and other digestive disturbances can reduce digestion and limit maximum breakdown and usage of the nutrients in grain. Change to a pelleted or extruded form of feed or both. This allows more calories to be available for your horse to utilize versus a texturized form. 4. Putting your horse on a quality probiotic supplement will help your horse digest and process nutrients more efficiently by improving the gut flora.
