TW: Eating disorders (I keep it mostly positive and this post contains important information relevant to disordered eating, but it could still be potentially triggering) Earlier this week, I finally received a diagnosis validating everything I've been experiencing over the past 4 years. Hypothalamic Amenorrhea.... I've always associated this condition with anorexia and over-exercising, so I did not think it could apply to me. This weird collection of symptoms that the doctors could not make sense of for the past 4 years could all be explained by HA. Today Kevin and I cooked up some of our Pierogi Me! pierogies for lunch, and we noticed they seemed different from usual. To my horror, some of the coconut bacon pierogies, which are supposed to be vegan, contained what looked and tasted like real bacon. We've had the coconut bacon pierogies many times before, so we're pretty sure real bacon got mixed in our latest batch as our supplier makes real bacon versions along with the vegan variety. We may have been the only ones t...o have noticed, but we want to be transparent. As vegans with a vegetarian and plant focused store, this is horrifying and disappointing to us, and I know many of you will be understandably be upset at this news. Luckily, we didn't sell too many pierogies from this batch, but we will gladly refund anyone who purchased our pierogies between Oct 31/20 and Nov 8/20. We will be pulling all flavours from our shelves in case other flavours were affected. We are SO sorry about this mistake, and we are currently speaking with our supplier to make sure it doesn't happen again. This should not have happened.

The community fridge is moving! We're sad to announce that Sunday, November 8th will be our last day of hosting the community fridge at Zero Waste Bulk. When Angel, the founder of the Community Fridge KW, approached us about potentially hosting KW's first community fridge, we happened to have a large unused fridge we were about to switch out for a new freezer. Excited about the idea, as the community fridge aligned with our mission of reducing waste and value of building com...munity, we decided to trial the project and hold off on the freezer. The reception was amazing. The fridge immediately began filling up with fresh donated foods, and we were able to feed many individuals and families while simultaneously preventing food waste. However, hosting a community fridge indoors presented some challenges, namely a lack of space and barriers to access as we are not open 24/7. Being a small, specialty grocer, we also didn't have much space to spare, and in these times when physical distancing is needed, this posed an additional challenge. The good news is that the next fridge location(s) will be outdoors, so the fridge will be accessible 24/7. We encourage you to follow @communityfridgeKW to be kept up to date on future locations as I believe they have some exciting news coming in the near future. We are grateful to have been able to pilot this project, bring awareness to the need for community fridges, and we're grateful for everyone that has contributed to the community fridge in any way whether by donating or simply spreading the word. As for what will happen to our physical fridge, we would gladly donate to another location able to host a large, open air fridge indoors. So far we have had no luck, so we are also open to giving away our fridge to another small business that may need one. I've been wanting to make a durian donut for a long time, but have always been too afraid of stinking up the store with the smell of durian. But I needed to try a durian donut, so for TODAY ONLY, we have a couple durian donuts available for the durian lovers or durian curious.... Durian is a custard-y fruit notorious for its pungent smell that is off putting to people who have never tried durian. It's often described as stinky, gasoline like, and garlicky. It's banned in some places due to its smell. But it tastes like sweet heaven (imo). Durian is one of my favourite foods! I actually grew to enjoy the smell of durian. It's an acquired taste but the durian also has many fans. Hurry over if you dare to try this novelty flavour as it's only available today! Today's other flavours: Pumpkin Spice Latte and Lemon Poppyseed -- Edit: Since some of you are wondering... You can find whole frozen durians at some Asian grocery stores. T&T usually has them and there were a few at New City Supermarket last week. Usually $20-$40 for a whole durian depending on the size. They can be a hit or miss. Vegan Mac N' Cheeze Sauce made in house is now available! This sauce is rich, creamy, and full of cheesy flavour. Not greasy - it's oil free. The richness comes from organic cashew cream. Thaw and heat. The sauce thickens as it heats. You can add water for a lighter sauce.... We made mac n' cheeze for dinner last night. It was DELICIOUS and so easy to make. I put the jar in the fridge in the morning to thaw so it would be ready for dinner. All I had to do was cook some macaroni and heat it in a pan with the sauce, adding 1/2 cup water to thin. And if you like ketchup with your mac n' cheeze, our new @theketchupproject ketchup is amazing with it. I loved the spicy ketchup with mine. The 473mL jar is enough for 5-7 servings of pasta. The 270mL jar is enough for 2-4 servings of pasta (5 cups of cooked macaroni). P.S. With have the Coconut Taro donut today, and we're also selling jars of the filling if you can't get enough of it.
