Left for a while. Worked on my smile. Deal with it

Last night didn't go how I planned. I wanted to have fun in ways I haven't in a while. I wanted to get to know new people and see new things. Instead I saw someone attempt to leave everything they knew behind. I saw someone jump off the Osborne Bridge into the Red River.... It wasn't the splash that stuck with me. It wasn't her belongings scattered painfully on the sidewalk. It wasn't even the hoards of people who came to her aid at 1:30 in the morning. What stuck with me was her screaming, "Why? I'd rather die." I know that pain is out there. Hearing it in PSA's is one thing. Hearing it in protests is another. But hearing it on the dark banks of the Red River is different. Hearing how real and how prevalent that pain is within my fellow brothers and sisters is really sitting deep in my gut today. Brothers and sisters I don't even know. But, does that matter? I wish I knew her. I wish I could give her a big bro hug. I wish I could listen to everything that sent her over that railing so I could join her as we flip our collective bird at all of it. If the water is ever looking nice, please talk to me. I'll always listen.

When I wake up I'm going to make a habit of waving. A habit of saying, "hi". A habit of human connection. I used to be like this kid. I used to say, "hi" to everyone. ... I was willing to learn new names and find new places. As I age I prefer solitude in most cases. I find it harder to step out of my home and into the great big dome.
