Be Candle Safe when celebrating Valentine’s Day! Most candle fires start when things that can burn are TOO close to the candle. Keep candles at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) from anything that can burn. Avoid using lit candles in bedrooms, bathrooms, and sleeping areas. Extinguish candles before you leave the room or go to bed. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell, and feel like real candles. https://www.brampton.ca//fire-e/Documents/CandleSafety.pdf

Even if the doors are open, avoid running vehicles or any other fuel engines such as a snow blower in your garage. In addition, never use barbeques, deep fryers, hot plates/burners, any portable fuel-burning appliance or generators inside your home or garage. Ensure outside heating vents are not blocked. Be cautious of where you pile snow against your home. Install a carbon monoxide alarm beside all sleeping areas in your home.

Tackle winter safely when refueling your snow blower and always make sure the motor has cooled before adding fuel. Clean up spilled fuel, which could easily ignite and cause serious burns. After a snowfall, clear the snow from around any fire hydrants. Hydrants are the main water supply source during a fire; this makes them a critical part of our firefighting operations. Help us by keeping fire hydrants clear and unobstructed throughout the winter and all year round.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed in homes and newly constructed homes may have the manufacturer’s protective tape or covers on them. Please check all the alarms on every floor in your home and test them monthly. If red protective tape or a cover is on the device, remove it immediately. Failure to remove the protective tape or cover will prevent the alarm from functioning properly. Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are essential life saving devices and will alert you to an emergency in your home. https://www.brampton.ca//Fire/Documents/Smoke%20Alarms.pdf

Prevent sparks from escaping your fireplace by using a sturdy metal or heat tempered glass screen. Be aware - screens and the glass fronts of gas fireplaces get hot. Empty ashes into a metal container. Keep the container outside and never empty the ash directly into a trashcan. Douse and saturate the ashes with water. https://www.brampton.ca//Fir/Pages/Winter-Fire-Safety.aspx

During the holidays, we should always keep fire safety on our mind. This includes staying in the kitchen when you cook, making sure you have smoke alarms on every single floor, CO alarms outside all sleeping areas and a safe meeting place outside. https://www.brampton.ca//Fire-Sa/Pages/Holiday-Safety.aspx
